The Lipscomb women’s basketball team hits the road again on Saturday traveling to Highland Heights, Ky., for Atlantic Sun action against Northern Kentucky in a 6 p.m. CT tip.
It will only be the third meeting between the two teams in Lipscomb’s NCAA era. Last season Northern Kentucky swept the Lady Bisons in its first year of action in the A-Sun to hold a slight 2-0 edge over the Purple and Gold.
The Lady Bisons are coming off a 78-66 loss to North Florida and will enter Saturday’s contest at 3-14 overall, 0-6 in the A-Sun.
Reigning A-Sun Player of the Week Danay Fothergill has had the hot hand of late, averaging 31 points in her last three contests. She leads the team in scoring for the year, dropping 21.2. But since league play has started, Fothergill has been even better. In six A-Sun contests she has three 30-point performances, including a career-high 34 against Mercer, and leads the league with 25.3 per game.
Ashley Southern is coming off of her 13th double-double of the year at North Florida where she scored 16 points and grabbed 12 boards. She now has a double-double in four-straight games. Southern is fourth in the league with a 15.9 point average and leads the league and ranks eighth in the nation in rebounding, 12.2.
Sara Bliss provided some much needed production in her last outing with 16 points. She is producing 11.1 per game this season.
Northern Kentucky began league play with five-straight wins before losing to Jacksonville on the road 67-56 last Saturday. The Norse begins a three-game home stand at 9-8 overall, 5-1 in the A-Sun when Lipscomb invades The Bank of Kentucky Center.
Melody Doss paced NKU with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year in the loss to JU. Christine Roush added 15 points for the Norse.
For the season Northern Kentucky rosters two double figure scorers, one being the A-Sun’s leading scorer in Doss. The junior forward is scoring 17.9 points per game and leads the team with 7.9 boards. Kayla Thacker averages 10.7 points in a team-leading 33.9 minutes per game. Thacker also leads the team with 26 made 3-pointers.
Roush is connecting on 52.6 percent of her long balls to lead the conference, 20-of-38. She is also tops in the league in free throw shooting at 91.3 percent (42-of-46).
Lipscomb stands second in the league in scoring in A-Sun play with an offense that puts up 70.8 per game. NKU is fourth at 68.8.
After facing the league’s top defense in North Florida last Saturday, Lipscomb will have another challenge against the third-ranked Norse defense. Northern Kentucky is holding conference opponents to just 58.8 points per game.
Lipscomb and NKU are the league’s top free throw shooting teams in conference play. The Norse leads all teams with a 79.3 percentage after sinking 92-of-116. Paced by Fothergill’s 81 percent, the Lady Bisons are second, draining 75.2 percent. They have made 94-of-125.
The Lady Bisons’ defense has been problematic at times this season. But they will need to play one of their better games on Saturday as NKU boasts the A-Sun’s second best field goal percentage in league play at 43.8 percent.
Lipscomb does hold an advantage over the Norse on the boards. The Purple and Gold pull down 38.4 rebounds per game. NKU is last in the conference at 34.5.
After the game on Saturday Lipscomb returns home for two games next week against the top two teams in the A-Sun - Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. Both are undefeated in league play.
The Lady Bisons will first welcome FGCU to Allen Arena on Thursday Jan. 30 with a 6 p.m. tip.
