Saturday, October 23, 2010The Lipscomb cross country teams are off this weekend, but they are still making news.
In the final Atlantic Sun Cross Country Coaches Poll of the season the Lady Bisons are ranked third behind first place Jacksonville and second place North Florida.
Jacksonville received six of the 11 first place votes. Lipscomb received three and North Florida two.
"Jacksonville is the defending champion and they deserve to be ranked No. 1 in the conference going into the championship,” Lipscomb cross country coach Bill Taylor said. “Obviously everyone expects them to win.”
The Lady Bisons have put together a solid worksheet this season with a pair of freshmen, Dani Walker and Alex Newby leading the way.
"I like where we are ranked,” Taylor said. “We've had an amazing year and we've beaten a lot of ranked teams, but obviously we still have to earn respect in the conference.
"There are four or five teams that are really good this year. I think Jacksonville, North Florida, USC Upstate and Lipscomb are four of the best teams the conference has ever seen.”
Ironically the USTFCCCA weekly poll has the Lady Bisons ranked sixth in the South Region. North Florida is seventh and Jacksonville is 11th.
Taylor is expecting even greater things from his runners as they head into the Atlantic Sun Cross Country Championship Oct. 30 at Milliken Research Park in Spartanburg, S.C. USC Upstate is hosting the meet.
"We've had a terrific year on the women's side,” Taylor said. “Nothing will change that.
“But our season isn't over yet. All indications are that we are ready to run well at conference. I like what I've seen the past two weeks. It will definitely be a fun meet."
The Bisons are fifth in the final A-Sun Coaches Poll. Kennesaw State is the overwhelming favorite garnering 10 of 11 first place votes.
In the USTFCCCA weekly poll the Bisons are rated 15th in the South Region.
"I've actually been kind of surprised that we've been ranked as high as we have on the men's side this season,” Taylor said. “We have a young team with a lot of potential, but we haven't put it together right on race day yet. It only takes one race though.”
Taylor thinks that there are several teams that could be surprises in the A-Sun Championship.
"Kennesaw is the clear favorite in the conference,” Taylor said. “I think Belmont is the next in line. But I also think that after Kennesaw there are maybe seven teams that could finish in almost any order.
“It looks to me like the men's side of the conference is weaker this year than it has been in many years. Yet, there also appear to be more teams that are close together. So it will probably be different than the last few years of two or three teams fighting it out for first, but it should be just as exciting."
