MACON, Ga. – After leading the Lipscomb cross country squad to the team title and winning the individual title herself at the Erik Anderson Invite, senior Dani Walker has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Runner of the Week.
“Dani had a great day on Saturday,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “She has been working hard to move herself up and her race at Spokane was an indicator that she is well above where she has ever been before.
“We have a team of women that you cannot predict who will be the number one runner in any race. Dani has great speed. If she is near the front, it is always hard to hold off her kick.”
This is her third A-Sun Runner of the Week award of her career.
Walker, a senior from Wichita, Kan., finished the 6K event in 21:39.83 enroute to a 1-2-3 Lady Bisons finish.
“One thing I was especially proud of Saturday was that Dani fell off the pack just before the last 1,000 meters,” Taylor said. “It was a key moment of decision and she could have let our other runners go. Instead, she put on a surge and caught back up. That is hard to do. She did it and both helped the team and herself.”
Lipscomb scored 20 points, leading to a 45-point victory over Simon Fraser and a 51-point advantage over Gonzaga.
Walker and the Lady Bisons return to the course Friday Oct. 4 for the Notre Dame Invite in South Bend, Ind.
