Josh Slater has traded in his basketball for bank accounts. After a stint in Germany in professional basketball Slater, a former guard for the Lipscomb Bisons, returned to his hometown and started a career in banking approximately a year-and-a-half ago. He left Lipscomb with a number of honors including being named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team as a junior and senior and a berth on the A-Sun All-Freshman Team. He was a member of the 2009-2010 team that won the A-Sun regular season championship. Despite a busy schedule he spent some time this week talking with lipscombsports.com.
What sport did you play at Lipscomb? What years? Who were your coaches?
"I played basketball from 2007 through 2011. Scott Sanderson was the head coach. Shaun Senters, Jay Walton and Pete Froedden were the assistant coaches."
What is your fondest athletic memory at Lipscomb?
"It would have to be beating Indiana my sophomore year. It was fun to celebrate a big win in the locker room with all of my teammates together after the game. It was the only high major program we beat while I was there."
What is your fondest non-athletic memory from your time at Lipscomb?
"I guess it would be every road trip. That is sports-related I guess. I liked just hanging with my teammates outside of the court like going together for meals and different events on weekends."
What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Lipscomb?
"I would say one of the biggest things I took away was self-discipline-managing my time and having the discipline to get done what I needed to get done on a day-to-day basis. Playing sports, going to classes and managing a busy schedule prepared me well for a life after sports."
Who was your favorite professor? Why?
"My major was corporate management. We had to work with all of our professors with scheduling. We got to know them and they were all really helpful.
"I always enjoyed Tom Seals' enthusiasm in class, but my favorite professor was Joe Ivey. I enjoyed his capstone business class. He prepared us for what the corporate world would be like and what business would be like after school.
"It was an interactive classroom. You had to be involved or else. He always had an open door policy. He is a really smart guy. He really challenged us to critically think about a subject."
Where do you live now?
Who is your employer? What is your occupation? What does your position entail?
"I work for Avenue Bank. I am a concierge banker. I have been here for a year-and-a-half. I have enjoyed my time here.
"My role is to open new accounts and do small consumer loans for clients. We believe in personal banking. We like to have personal relationships with our clients. My role is to cultivate those relationships and provide my clients with great customer service in helping them with their financial needs."
Tell us about your family.
"I am married to Mary (Wise) Slater. She graduated a year before me. She works as a marketing coordinator for Avenue Bank.
"We met through mutual friends in college my junior year and started dating. We were married in 2011."
