Lipscomb's Lady Bisons struck first, but couldn't hold on as they lost 3-1 Sunday afternoon to Valparaiso in their home opener.
"We wanted to win, but we knew this was going to be a tough game for us," said Lipscomb coach Jenger Parrish. "We came out here with the goal of playing the whole game, and not get our heads down no matter what happened. We wanted to keep learning from it."
Lori Johnson scored a pair of unassisted goals for Valparaiso with one in the first period at 24:16 and another in the second period at 52:51.
Jackie Thomas scored from the corner for the final goal for Valparaiso at 67:14.
Once again the Lady Bisons started five freshmen. Parrish is happy they are getting so much playing time, but would prefer to be able to go with more experience.
"We have a lot of really young players out there," said Parrish. "You get into a game like this and the pace is faster than anything they have ever played in before. They are having to do things they haven't done before.
"I'm proud of the fact they are hanging in there. They are not folding. They are not giving up.
The Lady Bisons were out shot 39-7 with Valparaiso holding a 29-6 edge in shots on goal.
Lipscomb goalkeeper Katie Shelton set a new school record for saves with 25, 17 of which came in the first period. Shelton has played sparingly in her first two seasons with the Lady Bisons.
"Katie did a great job," said Parrish. "She has been out for two years. When you go that long without game time it messes up your timing and your confidence.
"It is really good to see her start to look more comfortable. She is starting to look like the old Katie. The number of saves she made in this game should help her confidence even more."
Mele Cabral made five saves for Valparaiso.
Valparaiso had six corner kicks. The Lady Bisons did not have a corner kick.
The Lady Bisons fell to 1-5 overall. Valparaiso is 4-2.
The next game for the Lady Bisons is at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Austin Peay in Clarksville.
