Sunday, October 18, 2009The Lipscomb Lady Bisons scored late in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 2-1 Sunday afternoon in an Atlantic Sun game with Florida Gulf Coast at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
"I thought our girls played very well," said Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland. "The last two games we have done a much better job of being organized on defense. Once again, we gave ourselves a chance to win and that is all that we can do. We still don't have all of the pieces we need."
On a chilly and sun-splashed day in Nashville, Florida Gulf Coast struck first with a goal at the 40:34 mark of the first half by Amber McCall.
At 67:51 of the second half Gina Petracco scored for Florida Gulf Coast. McCall was credited with one of the two assists on the play.
"Martika Powe played an outstanding game," said Ireland. "Amber McCall is their best player and Martika did a really good job against her."
Ireland also thought that defender Katie Wood played a solid defensive game as well.
Kate Spellman found the back of the net for the Lady Bisons at the 82:19 mark of the second half.
She has four goals for the season. She has scored the lone goal in a game twice this season in a 1-0 win over Austin Peay Aug. 21 and a 1-0 win at Troy Sept. 2.
Last season she led the Lady Bisons with six assists and 14 points. She tied for the goal lead with four.
In addition to her four goals this season she has two assists and 10 points.
"Kate is a player we can always count on," said Ireland. "She works very hard. She is a very consistent player which is something we struggle with as a team. She shows up for every game and every practice ready to play. She had a really nice goal against Florida Gulf Coast."
The Lady Bisons are 3-13-0, 1-7-0 in the conference. Florida Gulf Coast is 9-5-3, 4-2-2 in the A-Sun.
The Lady Bisons knocked themselves out of the running for a spot in the conference tournament with the loss. They head to Jacksonville this weekend to face North Florida and Jacksonville.
"We could still have a say in who goes to the tournament," said Ireland. "Both North Florida and Jacksonville might have to beat us in order to go.
"The big thing for us the rest of the way is to keep getting better every time we practice or play. We have a lot of freshmen on the team and they need this experience."
