Friday, August 20, 2010The Lipscomb Lady Bisons are living dangerously.
Friday night at 7 they open up the 2010 soccer season with a visit from Chattanooga at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. This is the regular season opener for both teams.
The Lady Mocs feature two outstanding forwards in junior Donna-Kay Henry, a preseason All-Southern Conference selection, and sophomore Becca Smith.
Smith led the conference last season with 11 goals scored. Henry added nine.
“We won’t play two more dangerous attacking players all year long,” Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland said. “They were both nationally-ranked last season in the NCAA in goals scored.”
The Lady Mocs lead the series 2-1. Last season the Lady Bisons lost 2-0 at Chattanooga.
The Lady Bisons were picked to finished 10th this season in the Atlantic Sun. Chattanooga was tabbed for ninth place in preseason voting in the Southern Conference.
“Our games are always very competitive,” Ireland said. “Last season it was 0-0 until the 67th minute. They scored another goal in the last minute.
“Chattanooga always plays hard. They are very disciplined. They are very aggressive.”
Once again this season the Lady Bisons are going to be a young team with eight sophomores and six freshmen.
“We’re still a very young team,” Ireland said as he starts his fourth season. “I hope that is not an issue. Last year that caused us a lot of problems.”
The captains for the team are senior Kate Spellman and juniors Kirsten Heikkinen and Meghan McGuire.
“We have the best team chemistry, the best leadership and the most talent on this team since I have been here,” Ireland said. “The sophomores have grown up. The freshmen are capable of playing and contributing.”
Thursday night the three captains called a players only meeting.
“That was a positive sign,” Ireland said. “They wanted to make sure the girls are focused and that they understand what is at stake. They have shown very good leadership.”
