JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Victory was not in the cards for the Lipscomb women’s soccer team in their Sunday afternoon tilt at North Florida. A furious Ospreys attack doomed the Lady Bisons, who lost their eighth straight road contest, 4-0.
North Florida (8-8-1, 4-3-0 in the Atlantic Sun) got on the board early on with a 13th minute goal from Carolina Lencina. She took a feed from Lauren Hopfensperger and banged it in on the left side of the net. The goal was Lencina’s fifth of the season.
Two minutes later, Lencina assisted on Kathryne Husted’s fifth goal of the season. Lencina dropped a pass to Husted, who tucked the shot under the cross bar with one touch.
As though allowing two first-half goals wasn’t enough to dampen the Lady Bisons spirits, Lipscomb (4-11-1, 2-5-0 A-Sun) had problems of its own offensively. Lipscomb did not get away a single shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes of the contest.
“We just didn’t come to play today,” said Lipscomb head coach Jon Ireland. “This was a big game for us. We explained the stakes to our girls and unfortunately, they didn’t step up today.”
Senior Danielle Bethke posted Lipscomb’s first and only shot in the 52nd minute. North Florida keeper Megan Dorsey made the save.
North Florida gained two more second-half goals. In the 75th minute, Michele Larrinaga netted her season’s third, depositing a low shot to the far post after collecting a poor clear by the Lipscomb defense.
Denisse Soltero capped off the North Florida scoring with her season’s third in the 77th minute. Larrinaga beat her defender one-on-one, but Zerio turned away her shot. The rebound went right to Soltero, who poked it into the near side for the goal.
Despite the loss, Zerio turned in her second consecutive double-digit save performance. She made a season-high 11 stops against North Florida.
“We didn’t hustle today, and that’s a bad way to lose,” said Ireland. “We didn’t go down fighting.”
The Lady Bisons will be back home next weekend to cap off the regular season. Friday, Oct. 21, the Lady Bisons will host Florida Gulf Coast for a 7 p.m. kick-off. Sunday, Oct. 23, the Lady Bisons will end the regular season when they host Stetson at 1 p.m.
