NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb Lady Bison soccer team will hit the road this weekend for the end of what will end up being a four-game road trip. For this weekend’s matches, the Lady Bisons will be in Starkville, Miss., at the Mississippi State Bulldog Classic. Friday, Lipscomb will face Southern Miss in a 4 p.m. match, and will face off against host Mississippi State Sunday at 2 p.m.
Lipscomb enters the weekend with a 1-3-1 mark. The Lady Bison fell to a tough Chattanooga squad, 2-0, last Friday for their second loss in a row. Sunday’s match at Jackson State was washed out due to the effects of Tropical Storm Lee.
Lipscomb will need to get the offense back on track this weekend after failing to score in their past two games. Senior Meghan McGuire, the Lady Bison’s leading scorer, hasn’t scored since Aug. 26 against Nicholls State.
Junior keeper Erin Zerio has made 20 saves and owns a 1.15 goals against average heading into the weekend; the Novi, Mich., native has established herself as one of the better netminders in the Atlantic Sun.
This weekend marks the first time Lipscomb will face Southern Miss or Mississippi State. While the Golden Eagles so far have no common opponents with the Lady Bison, Mississippi State fell to Arkansas State, 3-1, on Aug. 21. Lipscomb drew with the Red Wolves, 1-1, to open the season on Aug. 19.
The Golden Eagles have gotten off to a 2-2-1 start with wins coming against Jacksonville State and Southeast Louisiana. The offense, led by junior Jordan Wagner’s four goals, has found its footing in the preceding three games, netting seven goals.
Mississippi State enters the weekend at 1-3-0, with a 1-0 victory over Jackson State halting a three-match losing streak to the likes of Arkansas State, UC Riverside and UC Irvine to begin 2011. The Bulldogs have mustered a mere two goals on the season, and just one in their previous three contests.
Lipscomb will finally return home to take on Austin Peay Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m., and will travel to Cookeville for a match with another Ohio Valley Conference foe (Tennessee Tech), Sep. 18 at 3 p.m.
