NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s and women’s tennis teams play host to ETSU and USC Upstate this weekend at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
Both the Bison and Lady Bison are coming off of a two-match trip through Georgia. Both teams picked up a win over Mercer but fell to Kennesaw State.
As the men enter their matchups this weekend, head coach Andrew Harris said mental preparation is key.
"The big idea that we have been working on this week is staying focused on what we can control,” Harris said. “Not worrying about external factors but understanding the importance of home court advantage is important. If you can take ownership of the fact that you have an obligation to protect your home courts, then that is a huge part of it.
“Individually, we need to stay focused in our doubles and make sure that in singles we get out to strong starts and come with the mentality that we will not give an inch. Once we are able to do that then we can begin to move on from there. We are looking forward to the weekend and getting back on track."
The Bison head into this weekend with a 1-2 Atlantic Sun record, while No. 72 ETSU leads the conference with a 4-0 record. USC Upstate, on the other hand, holds a 1-3 record heading into the matchup.
The Lady Bison also enter this weekend with a 1-2 A-Sun record. The ETSU women hold a 3-1 record, while USC Upstate only boasts a 1-3 record.
Harris said for the women to come out on top this weekend, they need to focus on execution.
"After splitting the road matches against KSU and Mercer, one thing that will be evident is that we are in every match,” Harris said. “It’s a matter of whether or not our execution is at the level it needs to be to win the match. Our success needs to be determined by our decision making and understanding of our game identity.
“Once we are able to come back to that in crucial areas and begin to master that end of things, then we will be solid moving forward. Our biggest challenge is understanding our identity during those situations."
Lipscomb hosts ETSU Friday at 2 p.m. and Upstate on Saturday at 10 a.m.
