Saturday, April 09, 2011The Lady Bisons closed out their season Saturday afternoon with a disappointing 5-2 loss to Atlantic Sun rival Belmont on Senior Day at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
The Lady Bisons finish the season 3-14 overall and 2-8 in the A-Sun.
"Today the girls started off strong with clinching the doubles point, however we were not able to capitalize on several opportunities in singles," assistant coach Jamie Aid said. "Today signified the end of the 2011 season, we are proud of our team and the way they have carried themselves on the court. Although this year was not one that reflected the wins we all desired, the girls were able to learn what it means to be a team."
"A special thanks to our seniors, Julianne McMeen and Kara Jackson! Both fought hard this year and will be missed. This team was a cornerstone team in the building of the Lady Bison tennis program," Aid said.
The Lady Bisons jumped out to an optimistic lead by clinching the doubles point with wins in two of the three doubles matches.
Lipscomb’s No. 1 doubles pair, senior Kara Jackson and freshman Alyssa Bellini defeated Abigail Hogan and Abby Leatherwood by a solid score of 8-4.
The doubles point got closer when Belmont’s Catherine Holliday and Natalia Nunes topped LU’s Julianne McMeen and Carlina Jow, 8-6 at the No. 3 position.
The Lady Bisons captured the doubles point and took an early lead in the dual, when juniors Danielle Hansen and Elizabeth Keevil fought back from four games down to defeat Laura Stack and Lindsay Bennett, 9-7 at No. 2 doubles.
With a 1-0 lead, the Lady Bisons headed into singles play, where they dropped five of the six matches to close out the 5-2 loss.
The Lady Bisons’ only win came at No. 4, where Hansen defeated Holliday in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Jackson was defeated at No. 1 singles by Leatherwood 6-2, 6-4, while Keevil fell at No. 2 to Fabiana Mersan 6-1, 6-1.
Bellini lost to Bennett at No. 3 almost taking the match to a third set but falling just short, 6-1, 7-5.
McMeen fell to Stack at No. 5 6-2, 6-4, while Jow was defeated by Hogan by the same score.
Since the Lady Bisons did not qualify for the post-season tournament, they now enter the offseason to train for the 2011-2012 season.
Jackson and McMeen, the team’s two seniors, were honored Saturday for their contributions and efforts that they have given to the program and university.
