The Lipscomb women’s tennis team closed out its fall season this past weekend when they competed in the “June Stewart Invitational” hosted by Vanderbilt University.
Head coach Andrew Harris said as the Lady Bisons head into the offseason the focus will be placed on doubles play.
"Being the last tournament for this fall, I was certainly eager to see how the progression was in terms of match play and seeing what adjustments our ladies have made through the past couple of months,” Harris said. “Through the doubles our aggressiveness will continue to become a focus and making sure that we are finishing points at the net and not becoming hesitant.
“We want to make sure that we encourage their aggressiveness and not become timid. I thought we did a better job of that as the weekend progressed.”
The Lady Bisons went 0-5 in doubles during the tournament, falling to teams from University of Memphis, Miami and North Carolina at Asheville.
On the singles side, the Lady Bisons posted three wins out of their 12 matches.
Freshman Deahna Welcher recorded a win in the consolation bracket, easily defeating Belmont’s Laura Stack 6-0, 6-1. In her first-round consolation match, freshman Jenny Borck posted a three-set win over UNC-Ashville’s Amryn Soldier, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Senior Sam Bowman also picked up a consolation win, defeating Belmont’s Spencer Anne Edwards 6-2, 6-0.
Harris said the focus for singles play this offseason will be on managing momentum shifts.
“In terms of singles, continuing to recognize key moments in matches where momentum is in the balance and taking control of those points will be key. Deahna Welcher bounced back on Sunday with her win over Belmont and so did Sam Bowman by ending her match on a strong note. With Jenny Borck and Alyssa Bellini, they both had solid singles matches on Saturday.
“We are looking forward to the next few weeks and going back to the drawing board and working on these items before January gets back."
The Lady Bisons will enter the offseason for the rest of the semester before starting up competition in January.
