Monday, April 05, 2010Two members of the Lipscomb Track & Field team competed in the University of Florida Pepsi Relays, while the rest of the team competed at Austin Peay. The Bisons and Lady Bisons found success in both locations.
At Florida, Ryan Chastain ran 3:51.14 for 1500m to finish 15th out of 41 competitors, while freshman Amanda Twigg set a new PR at 800m with a 2:15.73.
“Ryan’s race was unfortunate,” head coach Bill Taylor said. “People lie really bad with their entry times in a lot of these big meets. Ryan ended up in a slower heat. Guys that Ryan has beaten badly, who haven’t run within seven seconds of Ryan, were in the fast heat.
“ Ryan’s heat went out way too slow, and stayed slow through the 800m mark. He took the lead at 800m and ran a 4:00 mile pace for the rest of the race, but it was too late. He ran as good a race as was possible. It’s just disappointing, because we come down to a meet like this to compete against the fastest. It’s too bad when you don’t get that chance.”
Twigg continues to impress Taylor in her freshman year of competition.
“Amanda did great too,” Taylor said. “She barely made it into the meet with her entry time, but finished 16th of 32. So that shows again how badly many lie on their entries. She ran a terrific race though and negative split her 2:15. She’s got an incredible future!”
At Austin Peay, Lipscomb posted some great performances with four wins, nine second-place finishes and two third-place finishes.
Brittany Duerk highlighted the meet with a new Lipscomb school record in the women’s javelin of 123 feet, breaking the previous mark of 119-3 set by Jessie Strange in 2006. Brittany led a one-two sweep for Lipscomb in the event, with teammate Taylor Mason finishing second in 108-8.
Other event winners included freshman Sara Stephens, who won the 400m by almost 3 seconds (57.78), Adam Austin who jumped a new PR of 6-7 in the men’s high jump, and Logan Ray in the triple jump.
Sara Stephens doubled up to finish second in the 200m with a season best and school record 25.37. Other second place finishes included Catherine Beals in the two-mile, Mike Knox with a new PR of 49.77 in the 400m, Ashton Fisher in the 3000m Steeplechase, the men’s 4x400m relay, Alex Jerkins in the shot put, Austin Ray in the javelin and Emily Longden in the 1500m. Also of note in the women’s 1500m, Shelby Marvel finished fourth in 4:58.79. She is the sixth Lipscomb woman to break 5:00 this year (and Catherine Beals ran 5:00).
“It was a very successful meet at Austin Peay,” Taylor said. “We gave a bunch of our athletes the weekend off, yet we had strong performances in every event. We are having a great year across the board. New records are being set in the distances, sprints, jumps, throws. It’s great and we are a very young team.
“I’m proud of the way our athletes competed at both meets. I’m so happy for Mike (Knox) breaking 50! He’s been after that for two years and this race should unlock a whole new level of performance for him. “
Duerk has made a smooth transition from the basketball team to the track and field team.
“Brittany has fit in immediately with our team.” Taylor said. “It’s great to see that javelin record pushed out there. She is a terrific athlete, so it will be fun to see how far she throws the javelin, and with Taylor Mason right there too. The javelin is a great event for us!
“Alex is so consistent in the shot now. He has established himself at a whole new level.”
Sara Stephens and Catherine Beals have put together strong bodies of work this season.
“Sara is showing she can run from any lane, from the front or the back in any 400m or 800m race,” Taylor said. “That has to give her tons of confidence as we move to the final six weeks of the season.
“Catherine had a nice breakthrough this weekend. And we have six women under five minutes for 1500m, and three under 4:50. This is significant because my first year at Lipscomb we didn’t have a single woman break 5:00 in the open 1500m. My second year (last year), we had five women break five, but none below 4:53. Each year we get dramatically better. We will have more under five this year, and next year will be even better!”
