As the school year comes to an end, Lipscomb Athletic Missions and Spiritual Formation are making the most of the summer months by recognizing the opportunity students have to share and experience the Gospel overseas and right here in Nashville.
“Spiritual Formation within Lipscomb Athletics exists to train student-athletes and coaches to know Jesus and make Jesus known. We work to provide opportunities for our athletes and coaches to participate in the Kingdom of God, living in the unforced rhythms of grace,” says Chris Klotz, director of spiritual formation and athletic missions trip coordinator. “This way, they see their lives in light of a greater story and become fully alive in the purposes of God. These opportunities are what we have been praying and planning for.”
Malawi, Africa
On May 9, a team of 13 members from the women’s basketball program will head to Malawi, Africa to partner with the Sara Walker Foundation and the Mtendere Orphanage. The group will be serving orphans in the Mtendere Village through conducting sports clinics, tutoring, nutrition and mental health counseling, serving at Blessings Hospital and assisting the mobile medical clinic in nearby villages.
“The Athletic Missions program has had a steady and consistent presence in Africa for the last several years,” said Klotz. “We sent a general team to Uganda in 2016, the women’s volleyball team served in Malawi in 2017, another general team back to Uganda in 2018, and now members of the women’s basketball team back to Malawi in 2019. We have so much to learn from our brothers and sisters in Africa, and we are thankful to partner with what God is doing on that continent!”
