Bogdanovich leads men's tennis to weekend sweep

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb men’s tennis returned to Richland Country Club and swept its weekend matches to keep its unbeaten streak intact.

The Bisons improved to 9-0 on the year, by far the best start in the program’s history, with a pair of 4-3 victories against Abilene Christian and Butler.

“What a crazy weekend with two 4-3 wins against really good teams,” head coach Geoff Hernandez said. “We had some amazing performances from up and down the lineup. Everyone had their hand in the pot.

“This is one of the more fun and exciting times for this program.”

Lipscomb opened up both matches with a pair of dominant doubles points as all four wins came by scores of 6-2.  The No. 2 pairing of Jorge Ortegon and Pedro Uribe got the scoring started on both days, before top tandem Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena clinched the point on Friday. Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto and Jake Penny followed suit on Saturday.

In singles action against the Wildcats (7-5), Chaw earned his first ranked win of the season by defeating No. 91 Jonathan Sheehy in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 on the top line. After ACU picked up wins on courts two, three and six, the match was tied at 3-3 with one pairing to play.

Freshman Maksim Bogdanovich, playing at No. 5, defeated Riley Tran in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the match.

In singles play against the Bulldogs (11-6), Lipscomb jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match behind No. 3 Ortegon (6-3, 6-4) and No. 2 Caffarena (6-3, 6-3). However, Butler battled back and won the next three battles, once again forcing Bogdanovich to play the deciding tilt.

The freshman did what he’s done all season when facing the pressure, he came from behind to clinch the victory with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 decision.

“Maksim clinching both matches and going to 9-0 on the year, I can’t say enough about him,” Hernandez said. “I hate to make the weekend about a single person, but it’s hard not to this time. For him to dig it out with both matches coming down to him, it’s pretty amazing and I am really proud as a coach.”
