Women's Soccer Earns Road Win Over ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Goals from sophomore Molly Grant and junior Kelli Beiler lifted the Lipscomb women's soccer team to a tough-earned victory over East Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon from Summers-Taylor Stadium giving Lipscomb its first win of the 2021 season.

The first victory of the season was also Lipscomb's first win against ETSU since Oct. 3 2008, and ended a five-game losing streak vs. the Buccaneers.

The Bisons were able to gain some early momentum in the match, landing the first blow as Grant tallied her first goal of the season in the 21st minute. After intercepting a pass, senior Kaitlin Echols immediately went on the counter-attack and sent a long pass from just behind the midfield line to a streaking Grant at the top of the 18-yard box. The sophomore controlled the pass from Echols and took one dribble to get around the ETSU goalkeeper, who had came charging out of the net to try and posses the ball leaving the net wide open. Grant calmly sent the ball into the goal to put Lipscomb up, 1-0.

After halftime, the Bisons continued to press on the attack and were able to strike again in the 58th minute with Beiler's first-career goal in a Lipscomb uniform. Freshman Evee Reeder was dribbling the ball down the left side of the pitch and sent a cross into the box looking for Grant. Grant let the ball land at her feet and played a perfect touch pass back to Beiler, who was wide open at the top of the box. Beiler then unleased a rocket of a shot into the upper right part of the net increasing Lipscomb's lead to 2-0.

The match was made a little more interesting in the 68th minute when ETSU was able to put one on the scoreboard. Taylor Limprevil connected on a long-range attempt that just got past a diving CJ Graham. Lipscomb, however, remained focused and was able to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the match.

"It was an outstanding team performance today," head coach Kevin O'Brien said. "From start to finish we were the aggressor creating some really dangerous opportunities.

"It was good to have our first multiple-goal game of the season and they were both well-crafted and clinically taken goals. I'm so proud of these girls, how hard they work for one another and how they serve each other on the field. I feel like this result is a great way to springboard us into conference play. We will enjoy a day off tomorrow and get back to game planning for a very talented Kennesaw State team on Sunday."
