Softball Splits Home Opener Doubleheader vs. UNI

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Young teams can be unpredictable and inconsistent, especially early in the season.

The Lipscomb Lady Bisons showed both those characteristics Wednesday afternoon splitting a doubleheader with Northern Iowa from the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Lady Bisons beat the Panthers 9-1 in game one, ending the game in the bottom of the sixth due to the run-rule. Lipscomb dropped the nightcap, 3-1 at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium.

"We have to be able to do the little stuff every day to reach our goals," Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. "We have to continue to challenge ourselves in practice every single day to be what we want to be.

"The reality is this is still a young team. And I am never going to use that as an excuse because it is a very talented young team. They are learning very quickly, and we have thrown some of them into the fire quickly. We just need games."

Kailyn Packard (1-1) struck out 10 Lipscomb batters, allowed only six hits and did not walk a batter.

"Their pitcher in the second game did a good job against us," Ryman said. "She showed No.  1 starter stuff. She challenged us. That being said we are not a team that should strike out 10 times against any pitcher.

"We showed a little bit of youth, but at the same time it is still early in the season. We are still dealing with a little bit of making adjustments in the early season and in the moment being able to make those adjustments. That's a challenge for any hitter the whole season, but especially early."

Laine Barefoot (1-1) also scattered six hits, including a two-run homer and an RBI-double. She walked four and struck out two.

Presley Leebrick led Lipscomb with two hits. Kamrie Rich drove in Lipscomb's only run the game with a single to center field in the third inning.

In the opener the Lady Bisons scored two runs in the first, one in the second, three in the fourth and three in the sixth beat Northern Iowa 9-1 in a game called in the bottom of the sixth due to the run rule.

Big hits were the rule for Lipscomb. Kamrie Rich slammed a two-run homer over the left field fence with two outs. In the fourth, Caitlin Turner doubled to center field to drive in a run and Rich drove in two more with a single. Rich struck again in the sixth with a triple down the right field line to bring two runners home. A sacrifice fly by Olivia Ward brought home Rich with the final run.

In game one Lipscomb pitcher Bree Burke (2-1) gave up a two-out home run over the left field fence in first inning but shut down the Panthers the rest of the way on seven hits. She struck out seven and walked one.

Northern Iowa used three pitchers with Samantha Heyer (0-2) getting the loss.

"At the end of the day this is a team that is still growing and learning," Ryman said. "It is more difficult to swallow when you have a game like we did in the first game as the offense got a lot quieter. Even though it was frustrating we learned some lessons."

Extra Innings:
  • Rich's six RBI in game one is a career high.  She leads the team with eight.
  • Freshman Joie Giarrizzo doubled in the second inning for her first collegiate extra base hit.
  • In the first game the Lady Bisons had single-game highs for the season in runs (9), hits (12) and RBI (8).
  • Kyndall Crawford stole her first base of the season in game one.
  • Rich has four multi-hit games followed by Vetula with three and Caitlin Turner with two. Turner has three hits in each of those games.
  • Ward leads the team with a five-game hitting streak. Rich has hits in her last three games.
  • Leebrick has two multi-hit games.
Next Up:
The Lady Bisons are back in action this weekend at the Chanticleer Classic in Conway, South Carolina against Coastal Carolina.
Both Charleston Southern and Marshall have opted not to play in the classic due to COVID-19 concerns.
