Lipscomb Sees First Game vs FGCU Get Rained Out, Defeats Stetson In Game Two

KENNESAW, Ga. – In softball you either win, lose or get rained out.

The Lipscomb Lady Bisons experienced two of those possible outcomes Saturday afternoon at Bailey Park on the campus of Kennesaw State. In the opener for the Lady Bisons the weather was the winner as rain forced the end of their game with FGCU in the top of the fifth with the score tied 3-3. It was ruled a no contest.

After a long wait for game two, the Lady Bisons bats came to life with 14 hits in a 9-1 win over Stetson. The game was called in the sixth inning due to the run-rule.

"I am starting to see this team grow," Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. 'I am seeing them enjoy what we are doing and having more fun.

"We have asked a lot of them because we see so much in them. They are growing up right in front of our eyes. This can be a big turning point for us if we can find a way to continue that."

The Lady Bisons, who had not played a game since March 21 due to Covid-19 protocol, had an early morning wakeup call to face FGCU at 8:30 CDT.

"I am really proud of our team for a number of reasons, but there was a schedule change Friday evening," Ryman said. "Our team took the very early morning wakeup call in stride.

"They were very alert. We had a good warmup even though the tarp was on the field. They never used it as an excuse. I have appreciated their attitude through this whole trip."

This is an ASUN crossover series, so the games count on overall records, but not in the conference standings. Lipscomb evened its record at 12-12. Stetson falls to 6-18 with its third loss in a row,

The Lady Bisons exploded for seven runs in the second inning and never looked back. They added one run in the fifth and the decisive run in the sixth.

Stetson scored its only run in the fifth. It was the second loss of the day for the Hatters, a 7-1 loser to Bellarmine.

Caitlin Turner led the Lady Bisons with a four-for-four performance including two doubles and three runs batted in.

Katelyn Belding connected for three singles. Abby Davis added two singles and an RBI. Kyndall Crawford drove in two runs. Kamrie Rich also got an RBI.

Breana Burke (8-5) went the distance for Lipscomb. She gave up three hits, struck out three and walked one.

Jaime Tino (2-6) took the loss for Stetson. She scattered six hits and gave up seven runs, none of them earned in three innings. She struck out two and walked three.

Lauren Klein threw the final 2.1 innings. She allowed eight hits and two runs, one earned, and struck out one batter.

"It was fun to see our girls play loose," Ryman said. "It was also fun to see them do what we know they are capable of doing.

"As a coach it is fun seeing a team play with confidence and being in an attack mode. We had key at bats from several players. We did a nice job and had a good time doing it."

Extra Innings:
  • Caitlin Turner set a new season team high for hits and doubles in a game. She has six multiple hit games. It was her first multi-RBI game of the season.
  • The nine runs tied for the most in a game this season. They have scored nine runs in four previous games this season.
  • The 14 hits were two short of the season high against Coastal Carolina Feb. 27.
  • It was the second multiple RBI game for Crawford.
  • Rich extended her team-high current hitting streak to five games.
  • It was the first multi-hit game of the season for both Belding and Davis.
  • After the game with FGCU had been called, Ryman and David Deiros, raced from the outfield and slid on the wet tarp to the amusement of their players.
