Dominant Pitching Provides Lipscomb With Two Wins Over Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sweeping a doubleheader is always nice. Winning both games by shutouts is even better.

Tuesday afternoon the Lipscomb Lady Bisons beat Bellarmine 8-0 in game one in six innings as the game was called for the run rule.

A seventh inning outburst gave the Lady Bisons a 4-0 win in the nightcap at Knights Field.

Lipscomb evens its overall record to 16-16. The Lady Bisons are 5-7 in the ASUN. Bellarmine is 6-26, 0-12 in the conference.

In the final time at bat in game two the Lady Bisons exploded for four hits. With one out Abby Davis drove in Olivia Ward, who had reached base on a throwing error, with a single to centerfield.

Amy Vetula followed with a single up the middle to bring home Jessie Brown who had reached base on a single down the left field line.

Caitlin Turner's single to right center with two outs scored Vetula and Davis.

"We had a slow start in game two," Ryman said. "I thought we had trouble really getting solid barrel on the ball and really driving the ball.

"That is where we are with our hitters. We don't want to just settle for a ground single.  We will take that, but long term we don't want to be a team that hits ground singles all the time. It is harder to score runs that way."

Breana Burke (11-7) scattered three hits and struck out three for Lipscomb.

Carson Goatley fell to 4-9 as she gave up eight hits and four runs, one earned. She walked one, hit a batter and struck out two.

In game one Maddie Siemer evened her record at 3-3. She held the Knights to two hits. She walked two and struck out five.

"Bre and Maddie are giving us absolutely everything they have," Ryman said. "They are fighting and fighting for us every time out. I am just really, really proud of the continued effort we are getting out of them."

Bellarmine sent three pitchers to the circle as Lipscomb scored two runs in the fist and two in the second, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Natalie Magnus fell to 1-7 as she gave up four runs, two earned, and five hits in 1.2 innings. She struck out one and walked one.

Megan Murphy threw the next three innings. She allowed two hits and three runs, all unearned.

Kaylee Terral pitched the final 1.1 innings with one hit, one run, two walks and one strike out.

Vetula and Ward each connected for two hits. Vetula and Caitlin Turner slammed a double each.

"In game one we had a fast start," Ryman said. "We were making some things happen early.

"That gave us a little comfort. We did a nice job throughout the game of making things happen. But even with that we left a lot of runs out there. As a coach you are never satisfied. I still think we can be better at the plate."

Extra innings:
  • The Lady Bisons have shutdown opponents five times this season.
  • It was the fourth time this season they have run-ruled a team.
  • Burke and Siemer each have two shutouts. They have also combined for one.
  • Caitlin Turner has hits in her last six games.
  • Vetula's two hits in game one gave her 11 multi-hits games. Caitlin Turner with two hits in game two has nine multi-hit games.  Davis with two hits in game two and Ward with two in game one each have two multi-hits games.
  • Vetula stole three bases, two in game one and one in the night cap. She leads the team with 17.
