Bisons Draw vs. Bellarmine, 1-1, To Close Regular Season

NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a hard fought 1-1 draw with Bellarmine on Saturday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Junior midfielder Kelli Beiler scored her ninth goal of the year and found the back of the net for the third time in the last four matches.

Despite the tie, Lipscomb finished the regular season undefeated in conference play, which is the first time in program history the Bisons have achieved that mark.

Saturday's match was competitive throughout its entirety and saw the first 45 minutes come to a 0-0 conclusion. Each team was only able to register one shot on goal in the first half.

The action picked up out of the break, but it was the Knights who struck first. In the 50th minute, Isabella Zamborini broke behind the Lipscomb back line on a run down the left side of the pitch and Alex Harber sent a pass over the head of everybody leading Zamborini to be one-on-one with Bison goalkeeper Melissa Gray. Zamborini took one touch and netted her shot into the back of the goal to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Bisons, however, came up with an equalizer in the 59th minute. Lipscomb carried the ball into the attacking third of the pitch with some nice passing between Beiler and Emanuela Schurch. Working a nice give-and-go, Beiler passed it Schurch, who quickly returned it to Beiler and after one touch she ripped her opportunity into the goal to knot the match at 1-1.

It was the ninth goal of the season for the Mount Pleasant Mills, Pennsylvania native, which leads the Bisons and the ASUN Conference. It was Schurch's second assist in as many games, which is tied for second on the team.

The final 31 minutes of regulation would come to a close with the two sides still locked at 1-1. The Bisons were able to apply pressure in both overtime periods, totaling six shots over the 20 minutes. Senior Kaitlin Echols nearly had herself a game-winner in the 104th minute with a point-blank rocket coming off a corner, but Bellarmine goalkeeper Elyssa Francis was just able to punch it away to keep the match going. The final horn sounded after 110 minutes and Lipscomb and Bellarmine would settle for a draw to end the 2021 regular season.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH KEVIN O'BRIEN:
"Tonight was a really good and competitive game from start to finish. I thought Bellarmine came out with their organization and just the way they competed made it really hard for us to connect the way we kind of have been over the last couple of weeks, so credit to them.

"We made some adjustments in the second half, got a little more aggressive in some areas, took more chances. I thought we finished really well. Their keeper made two phenomenal saves and was really solid all night. Playing three games in a week is extremely difficult, so I'm that much more proud of how hard we competed tonight on heavy legs.

"I'm looking forward to getting to host [a playoff match]. The reality is we're just grateful we get to keep playing. We're happy we get to be the number one seed and host, so we'll take any game we can get."

HERD NOTES:
UP NEXT:
Lipscomb awaits the winner of the Liberty vs. North Alabama first round matchup. Once that is decided, the Bisons will host the ASUN Championship Quarterfinal match April 10 in Nashville at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Kickoff time will be announced at a later date.
