Lipscomb Falls To Liberty In Game 3 Of ASUN Championship Quarterfinals

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Lipscomb softball team fell 8-0 to No. 1 seed Liberty in the rubber match of the ASUN Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Softball Stadium. The No. 4 seed Bisons finish the 2021 season with an overall record of 18-18.

The league leading and high-powered offense of Liberty was on full display from the beginning of the game, as the Flames jumped out to an early lead. In the first inning, Liberty scored five runs. Autumn and Amber Bishop led off with back-to-back doubles, plating one run and Emily Sweat followed with a two-run home run. A RBI double from Devyn Howard and a RBI single by Madison Via scored the fourth and fifth runs of the frame.

The next four innings went scoreless, as Lipscomb's Breana Burke and Liberty's Emily Kirby dueled it out in the pitchers circle.

It was in the bottom of the sixth when the Liberty bats came back to life. Amber Bishop recorded her second RBI double of the game for the first run of the inning and Savannah Channell recorded a RBI on a bloop single to second base. Blake Gibson plated the third run on a single back up the middle to enforce the run-rule and end the game.

Amy Vetula, Caitlin Turner, Kamrie Rich and Kyndall Crawford each collected base knocks, with Rich hitting a double, but the Bisons offense struggled to get anything going against Kirby. On the day, Kirby held Lipscomb to just four hits, allowed three walks and struck out seven.

HERD NOTES:
  • Rich's double was her fifth of the year.
  • It was the third-consecutive start in the circle for Breana Burke after starting both games in Fridays doubleheader. Over her three games, Burke threw 398 pitches in 19.1 innings.
  • Saturdays result was the fourth time in five contests the Flames held the Bisons scoreless.
