Men's Soccer's Patrick Stubblefield: Where Are They Now?

Patrick Stubblefield remains close to athletics after a soccer career at Lipscomb University where he earned ASUN All-Academic Team honors. He was on the team when the Bisons soccer program won its first-ever NCAA Division I game during the transition from NAIA. He spent some time remembering his days on the Lipscomb campus for Lipscombsports.com.

What years did you compete for Lipscomb and who coached you?

I played from 2003-2005 under Coach Jon Goad and Coach Jim Maddux.

What teammates were most memorable?

I played with some great teammates, many of whom I still stay in touch with today, so it would be hard to single any one of them out.

What degrees have you earned, from where and when?

BS, Exercise Science – Lipscomb '06
Master of Sports Administration – Belmont '10
JD – Louisville '14
Ph.D., Adult and Higher Education, Intercollegiate Athletics – Oklahoma (in progress)

Why did you attend Lipscomb?

I attended specifically to play soccer.  I had been injured during my final year of high school and thought I was done, but I healed up around Christmas of my freshman year at Appalachian State. I played intramurals in the spring and got the itch to play again.

I was introduced to coach Goad who told me that if I transferred then I could attend preseason training camp to see if I was good enough to join as a walk-on.

What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?

Being a part of the school's very first victory as a Division I program was pretty awesome. But personally, walking into the locker room at the end of that first preseason training camp to see my name above a locker and training gear waiting for me is my favorite memory.

It was a surreal moment because everybody else in the room knew they had a spot on the team…I didn't.  I had taken a leap of faith, transferred and moved without any assurances that I'd be on the team so that moment when I found out that I had made it was really special.

What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?

I remember being challenged, by both my professors and my friends.  I had my eyes opened on more than one occasion, and I grew up a lot during my time at Lipscomb.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned in your time at Lipscomb?

To antagonize my own beliefs.

Who were your favorite professors and why?

Professor Kent Johnson – I didn't perform up to my capabilities in his classes, and I think he knew that I was underachieving. He really challenged me to step it up academically.

Interestingly, I didn't really respond to those challenges until after I left Lipscomb.I bumped into him in North Carolina before Lipscomb's March Madness appearance, and he seemed quite surprised by my post-Lipscomb academic endeavors!

I think there's a lesson in that. You're not always going to see the fruits of your efforts, but that doesn't mean the fruit isn't there.Keep working and don't be discouraged.

Where did you grow up?

Gallatin, Tennessee

Where do you live, and what do you do now?

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah.  After a few years working on-campus in NCAA compliance offices, I've transitioned to private practice and am a partner at the law firm Freeman | Lovell.

My main practice areas are sports, entertainment, and business law.  In the sports space I've been assisting student-athletes and companies with name, image, and likeness opportunities and I've gotten involved on the legislative side of that issue as well.  I also assist student-athletes with any compliance issues they encounter so I'm still very much involved in college athletics.

In the entertainment space, I've been fortunate to have gotten plugged in to Utah's film community and have been working on some really cool film projects with some of my clients.

On the business side, I work primarily with small businesses and start-ups assisting with business formations and reorganizations, contractual matters, business fundraising, etc.
