Women’s Soccer Claims Road Win Over Hatters

Final Score: Lipscomb 1, Stetson 0
Location: Deland, Fla. (Athletic Training Center)
Records: Lipscomb (10-5-2), Stetson (6-9-1)

DELAND, Fla. – Lipscomb women's soccer picked up its tenth win of the season Sunday afternoon from a contest with the Stetson Hatters. Senior Kelli Beiler earned her 11th goal of the season when she put a header past the defense on a free kick from Logan McFadden in the 34th minute of play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The match began with a Stetson kickoff and the Hatters immediately sought to test the strength of Lipscomb's defense. The Hatters put up the first shot of the match just under 90 seconds into play, but Shelby Craft stepped in to block the attempt.

Alivia Carapazza recorded Lipscomb's first shot of the match in the seventh minute from right outside the box, but it was collected by Stetson's keeper. The two squads continued to trade possession, but the Bisons' offense looked for connecting passes from their defense. Carapazza recorded another shot right after the fifteen-minute mark as Kale'a Perry and Kelli Beiler combined to regain possession of the ball in the Bisons' end of the field to set up Carapazza for a one-on-one opportunity.

Perry soon added a shot of her own to the Bisons' tally just a few minutes later on a corner kick. Emanuela Schurch partnered with Perry to confuse the Hatters' defense and Perry sent in a rocket with her left foot that was pulled out of the air by Stetson's netminder.

The two teams continued to trade shots – sophomore goalkeeper CJ Graham pulled down her second save of the match on a drive from the Hatters – but it was Kelli Beiler who broke onto the scoreboard first. The Mount Pleasant Mills, Pa. senior fought through a pack of players to claim the header opportunity on a free ball from Logan McFadden and she sent it flying past the defenders and goalkeeper to grab the first goal in the match for Lipscomb.

The Bisons put four up four more shots to the Hatters' one additional shot in the first half, but the score held at 1-0 going into the break. The tension ratcheted up as play began in the second half.

Carapazza made the first shot of the second half in the 48th minute of play, but Stetson's keeper collected the ball and returned it to play. After the Hatters made a shot of their own and missed high, Beiler and Carapazza continued to hammer shots towards the Stetson goal.

Possession continued to trade hands throughout the half and each team had a player receive a yellow cared before the 85th minute. Beiler danced through three defenders on a throw in from Emily Patti, but Stetson's keeper collected the shot and the score held through the final whistle.

HEAD COACH KEVIN O'BRIEN:
"It was a great result today against a really talented Stetson team. Like many Sunday games it was a grind, it was hot, it was physically demanding, and I thought the team stood up to the challenge well.

We got the goal that we needed to ensure the three points this week, and in the end, we defended well late in the game when we were under some pressure. As a coach, I couldn't be any more proud of the team. All 18 of our available players pitched in and everyone put in good shifts and that's what we're going to need as we're finishing out the ASUN regular season. Moving into the postseason, it's really important to capitalize on results when you can.

I'm so thankful for the effort that the girls put in was needed considering the last two results didn't go our way. So, I'm proud of the girls for showing some resiliency. We're going to have a safe trip home and are excited to play our final regular season game at home against Jacksonville State next weekend
