Women’s Soccer's Season Draws to a Close in ASUN Quarterfinals

Final Score: Central Arkansas 1, Lipscomb 1 (5-4 PKs)
Location: Fort Myers, Fla. (Pickering Field at the FGCU Soccer Complex)

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lipscomb's women's soccer team's season drew to a close Thursday night after their first-round matchup with Central Arkansas. The two squads were tied after regulation and two periods of overtime, and the Bears advanced with a 5-4 penalty kick count after eight rounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bisons began the match with a spring in their step that was challenged early by Central Arkansas. The Bears opened up a 1-0 lead with a high shot from right outside the 18-yard box that snuck in the top of the goal in the sixth minute of play.

Emanuela Schurch posted a strong challenge for the Bisons at the 17-minute mark as she recorded her second shot of the match on a rebound from Kelli Beiler that ricocheted off the left post. Faith Adams, Alivia Carapazza, and Shelby Craft joined Schurch in knocking on the door, but it was senior Kelli Beiler who found the back of the net first.

The Mount Pleasant Mills, Pa. product recorded her 12th goal of the season off of a cross from Kale'a Perry that was deflected by the Bears' keeper. Beiler popped the rebound up 30 feet in the air and her shot dropped in the bottom right corner of the net as it came back down.

The Purple and Gold racked up three more shots in the period, but the score held at an even 1-1 going into the break. Looking to carry the Bisons' momentum into the second half, Craft claimed the first shot of the period just eight seconds into the second half, landing it on target and forcing the Bears' keeper to make a save on the blazing shot.

The Bisons dominated the second half offensively, outshooting the Bears 18-1. Of their 18 shots, five were on target, but the Bisons continued knocking on the door with shots that just skimmed outside the pipes or flew off the crossbar, such as a rocket from Adams in the 52nd minute that eked out past the right post.

Despite the fight, the two programs remained tied at the end of regulation time, sending the contest into two 10-minute overtime periods with a two-minute break between them. The Bisons kept up their dominating offense and aggressive defense throughout overtime, outshooting the Bears 4-0 and 7-0 in the two periods respectively.

Kendall Wade flew in for a header in the seventh minute of the first overtime period, but it went wide right in one of the Bisons' near misses in the first frame of overtime. Beiler bounced a header of her own off the crossbar in the 101st minute of action Thursday night.

With both of Lipscomb's on-target shots being turned away by the Bears' netminder, the match turned to penalty kicks to decide who would move on to the next round. Emily Patti, Kelli Beiler, Faith Adams, and Kendall Wade all made their penalty kicks, but the Bears made their fifth shot in the eighth round of PKs.

Sophomore goalkeeper CJ Graham valiantly defended the Lipscomb goal as she delivered two saves in the first half of the match and stayed alert throughout the rest of the match as she darted out to support the Bisons' defense and chip long balls up the field to the Purple and Gold's offense.
