Softball Concludes Charleston Tournament With a Set of Split Results

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Lipscomb's softball team played their final two matches of the College of Charleston's Cougar Invitational on Saturday and picked up a win and a loss over the course of the day.

The Bisons first faced the Binghamton Bearcats, taking the contest 5-3 thanks to a set of RBIs in the 5th and some clutch play at the plate in the 9th. The squad next faced off with Valparaiso and despite a strong start, the Bisons fell to the Beacons 6-7 in their final game of the weekend.

GAME ONE: Lipscomb 5, Binghamton 3

Coming off of a strong performance Friday wherein the Bisons earned their first two wins of the season, Lipscomb's squad began the match with some aggressive offensive play.

First batter up Amy Vetula took advantage of fielding error by the Bearcats defense to get on base and made her way to third after capitalizing on a sacrifice bunt from Presley Leebrick and a wild pitch from the opposition. Maci Cunconan cracked a fly ball which the Bearcats dropped, allowing her to take first and then steal second.

The Bearcats went up 1-0 at the bottom of the 1st with an RBI single which held as the score until the top of the third frame. Junior Presley Leebrick placed a single to the right side, batting in Vetula to even out the score. Leebrick advanced to third, but the tie would stand until the 5th inning of the contest.

After strong pitching and defensive work from both teams, the Leebrick and Cunconan made it on base to force a pitching change early in the inning. Katelyn Belding then earned a walk to send Leebrick to home plate. Fort Myers, Fla. native Meghan Kline then reached first on a fielder's choice, sending Cunconan to the plate, giving the Bisons a 3-1 lead.

The Bearcats notched two runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th back to a stalemate which held through to carry the game to the 9th inning. The Bisons continued their uncompromising offensive play with an RBI from Vetula to send Kaitlynn Hunt to home plate, followed by Vetula scoring on a fly from Cunconan after getting to second on a Leebrick ground ball.

Junior Emily Yakubowski, tapped to take over in the circle for Peters in the bottom of the 7th, earned her first win of the season as she led the Bisons through the final frames of the contest. Lipscomb's defense held strong through the ninth, allowing only one runner on base as they collected the final three outs of the game to seal the Bisons' victory.

GAME TWO: Lipscomb 6, Valparaiso 7

Fresh off their morning victory, the Bisons entered their final match of the tournament firing on all cylinders, going up 3-0 in the first stanza against the Beacons.

Vetula and Leebrick made it on base with a pair of back-to-back singles to open the first inning. Maci Cunconan slammed a triple to the right of center, sending Vetula and Leebrick to home plate before snatching a run for herself on a Valparaiso throwing error.

Lanie Barefoot took to the circle for the Bisons and helped hold the Beacons to two run-less innings. Lipscomb's defense put up an impressive second inning, allowing no runners on base and collecting two quick grounded outs and pulling down a fly ball to close out the second frame.

Sophomore Katelyn Belding kicked things off in the 4th inning as she earned a walk to first before advancing to second on a left-side single from Elise Shewmaker. The duo advanced to second and third following a fly-ball out for Kline and a wild pitch from the Beacons.

Center-fielder Joie Giarrizzo connected on the fourth pitch for a single up the middle, sending Belding to home plate and advancing Shewmaker to third. Calling on their dogged dedication to an opportunistic offense, Giarrizzo stole second while Shewmaker stole home plate to give the Bisons a 5-0 lead.

Valparaiso cut the Bisons' lead to three as they capitalized on a fielding error and a wild pitch to bring the score 5-2 as they closed out the 3rd. These runs lit a fire under the Beacons offense, and the Indiana team earned four runs over the next two innings to give Valparaiso the lead for the first time in the face-off.

Amy Vetula led things off for the Bisons in the 6th as she bunted to take first base. Presley Leebrick offered up a sacrificial bunt of her own to see Vetula on to second, giving her the opportunity to take third on a wild pitch.

Cunconan was next up to the plate and sent a hit to the right side, batting in Vetula to bring the Bisons to a 6-6 tie. Cunconan was caught stealing second and after taking first for being hit by a pitch, Belding was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice from Shewmaker to end the Bisons' turn at the plate.

Emily Yakubowski, tabbed as a reliever for Barefoot at the end of the 5th, threw a strong inning in the bottom of the 6th frame as she nabbed a strikeout and a pair of grounded outs to third base, but the Beacons capitalized on a throwing error from Hunt to pull ahead 7-6.

Eden, N. C.'s Kyndall Crawford took the plate for the Bisons to open the 7th, snagging a single to first and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kline. Junior Ashley Montyoa was tapped to pinch hit for Giarrizzo but struck out swinging. Kaitlynn Hunt was the next Bison to the plate, connecting on a pitch but going out on a ground ball to first to confirm the Beacons' win.
