Softball struggles against North Florida in ASUN-opening doubleheader

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – Lipscomb softball opened ASUN Conference play with a disappointing Saturday after dropping both games of a doubleheader. The Bisons dropped game one 5-2 and then lost 8-0 in game two.

The defeats move Lipscomb to 9-17 overall and 0-2 in league play, while UNF improved to 25-6 and 4-1.

GAME 1
The Ospreys scored their first run in the bottom of the first after three straight 1-out hits to go up 1-0. The score stayed that way until the third frame when UNF added another run behind three more base hits. The tally came on a sacrifice fly to center.

UNF broke open the game, extending its lead to 5-0 after four knocks and a Lipscomb error in the fourth. The Ospreys singled and doubled on their first two batters to start the frame. The damage came six batters in behind a 2-RBI single to right and then a RBI-double down the line in left.

The Bisons finally got things going in the top of the sixth when Amy Vetula laid down a bunt single to start the inning off. Two batters later, Maci Cunconan ripped her team-leading sixth triple into the right field corner, allowing Vetula to score from first.

Two batters later, Elise Shewmaker dropped a single into right field to knock in Cunconan and trim the score to 5-2. However, that would be all the visiting Bisons would get as UNF shut the door the rest of the way.

Laine Barefoot (4-5) took the defeat after allowing five runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings. Mariyn Waterman and Kate Peters each worked an inning in relief.

UNF's Halle Arends earned the win and improved to 12-1 on the year. She tossed 5.1 innings with two runs on four hits and four strikeouts.

Lipscomb managed just five hits in the game and drew two walks. Joie Giarrizzo led the team with a 2-for-3 day at the dish.

GAME 2
Emily Yakubowski made her fifth start of the year in the circle. And after giving up just four runs over her last 16 innings pitched, the junior ran into all sorts of trouble in the first inning Saturday.

The Ospreys scored seven runs on four hits with two walks and two hit by pitches. They had eight batters in a 9-player span reach base.

UNF made it 8-0 in the second inning on a 2-out solo home run.

Lipscomb scored its only run of the game in the fourth frame when Kamrie Rich singled home Cunconan after she singled and then swiped second for her third stolen base of the year. Those were the only two base hits of the game for the Bisons.

Yakubowski dropped to 2-4 on the year after allowing nine runs on seven hits. Kate Peters came on in relief and worked the final two innings. She gave up three hits and three walks, but didn't allow any runs with two punch outs.
