Softball walks it off in wild, extra-inning affair with Chattanooga

NASHVILLE – In one of the most exciting back-and-forth games in recent memory, the Lipscomb softball team walked off Chattanooga 11-10 in nine innings Wednesday evening at Draper Diamond in nonconference action.

The Bisons struck gold in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead after Amy Vetula reached on a fielding error to start things off. Presley Leebrick then singled, while Maci Cunconan followed with a walk to juice the bases.

Kamrie Rich then pulled a ball through the left side to drive in Vetula from third. The next two batters grounded into fielder's choices, resulting in force outs at the plate, but a wild pitch got away and allowed Rich to score from 60 feet to give Lipscomb its two-run advantage.

The Bisons added another run in the second frame when Leebrick ripped her second base hit in as many at-bats into center field, scoring Jessie Brown to make it 3-0.

Lipscomb kept its hot start going in the third inning with back-to-back singles and a hit by pitch to load the bases to begin the frame, but all was for naught after Joie Giarrizzo lined into a double play back at the pitcher and then Brown grounded out.

Despite having just one hit through the three innings, the Mocs exploded with four runs in the fourth on two home runs and two doubles to take a 4-3 lead.

Lipscomb evened the game back up at 4-4 in the home half of the stanza on a Kaitlyn Woodside single down the left field line to drive in Leebrick who doubled to center with one out.

The Bisons regained their lead in the sixth on an Elise Shewmaker single to right field. Leebrick, who recorded her fourth straight hit earlier in the frame, came around to score to give Lipscomb a 5-4 lead going into the seventh.

The Bisons were just one out from victory when the Mocs blasted a 3-run shot over the left field fence to go back in front, 7-5.

However, the purple and gold never quit as head coach Kristin Ryman went to the bench for pinch-hitters in search of a rally. Kelly Paulson and Ashley Montoya came through with back-to-back singles before Tori Womack hammered a ball into right center for an RBI double, bringing the Bisons to within one. On the next at-bat, Vetula lifted a fly ball to center, but it was deep enough for Montoya to score and tie the game back up at 7-7.

UTC went back in front in the eighth on a 2-run homerun after international tiebreaker rules placed a runner at second to start the inning.

Then, it was Lipscomb's turn. With two outs and one runner on, Kyndall Crawford singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. Giarrizzo then smacked a double to the wall in right center, bringing around both runs to tie the score at 9-9.

For the third-straight inning, the Mocs took a lead in the top of an inning when a throwing error brought home the go-ahead run, putting Lipscomb in a 10-9 hole.

In the bottom half with Brown placed at second, Vetula singled on an 0-2 count to tie the game. After back-to-back strikeouts, Rich walked things off with a single into left field, driving in Vetula for the game-winning run.

Kate Peters earned the win in the circle for the Bisons, working the final 2.0 innings and giving up one unearned run on one hit. She improved to 3-4.
