Game Recap: Softball |

Softball drops two on day one of Purple/Gold Challenge

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb softball dropped both of its games Friday in the first day of the Purple/Gold Challenge at Draper Diamond.

After five shutout frames in the opener against SEMO, the Bisons surrendered seven runs over the final two innings in a 7-1 loss. They then squandered an early 4-3 lead against Dayton as the Flyers scored a single run in four consecutive frames to earn the 5-4 win over the purple and gold in the nightcap.

The losses dropped Lipcomb to 4-12 on the season, including six straight.

GAME ONE – SEMO 7, Lipscomb 1
The two sides were locked in a pitching duel as freshman Kate Peters tossed one of her best games of the year early. She allowed just two hits through the first five innings and whenever she got in a jam, she always seemed to find a way out.

In total, Peters worked 6.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Entering the sixth inning in a scoreless game, SEMO hit a one-out double to left center and then followed it up with a 2-run homer to center for the game's first runs. After an eight-pitch walk, she was lifted for Laine Barefoot.

Barefoot gave up four singles sandwiched around a pop fly. The last two resulted in three more runs to take a 5-0 lead over the Bisons. Peters reentered the game for the final out of the sixth, but when she came back in the top of the seventh, the Redhawks got a single, a walk and a 2-RBI double to right.

The only run of the game for the Bisons came in the home half of the seventh when junior Kyndall Crawford smacked a solo shot over the fence in right center for her first-career home run.

Amy Vetula and Joie Giarrizzo led the team with two hits each, but the story of the game was the seven runners left stranded. Lipscomb went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-10 with runners on base.

GAME TWO – Dayton 5, Lipscomb 4
Lipscomb's offense was finally able to score some runs early, pushing across all four tallies in the first two frames. But from there, they were unable to get anyone else across as Dayton scored a run in every inning from the third to the sixth.

Presley Leebrick started off the hit parade in the first inning with a single up the middle, then Maci Cunconan and Kamrie Rich followed to load the bases. Elise Shewmaker made it four in a row for the Bisons with a 2-RBI single through the right side to go on top 2-1.

After Lipscomb retired the Flyers in order in the top of the second, Kaitlynn Hunt drew a leadoff walk in the home half. Kelly Paulson moved Hunt over with a sacrifice bunt before Vetula walked to put two runners on. Two batters later, Cunconan singled through the right side to score Hunt and advanced to second on the throw home. In the next at-bat, a wild pitch allowed Vetula to come the final 60 feet to make it 4-1 Bisons.

Dayton scored runs in the third and fourth to trim the game to 4-3. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bisons had the bases loaded with one out, but an infield fly and a groundball to second base ended any threat.

The Flyers tacked on their final runs in the next two innings on sacrifice flies to regain the lead at 5-4.

Lipscomb's best threat the rest of the night was when Cunconan laced a two-out triple to left field in the sixth, but a ground out quickly took the tying run off the board.

Makayla Veneziale took the loss (1-4) after tossing 5.0 innings where she surrendered four earned runs on five hits with four punchouts and two walks. Emily Yakubowski worked the final two innings, facing seven batters and striking out one.

Cunconan led the team with three hits in four at-bats, half of the team's hits, while Shewmaker paced the squad with two RBI. The Bisons left nine runners on base, bringing their total to 16 on the day.
