NASHVILLE – Emily Yakubowski flirted with perfection as the Lipscomb softball team blanked SEMO 2-0 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Purple & Gold Challenge at Draper Diamond.
The junior hurler was nearly unhittable against the Redhawks (9-7) as she faced just one batter above the minimum (22). The southpaw pitched 7.0 shutout innings and allowed just a single base hit, while striking out four on 86 pitches.
The only baserunner she allowed by a 1-out single to right center on her 10th pitch of the fourth inning. Outside of that, she tossed six three-up, three-down frames.
For the Bisons at the dish, it took them three innings before getting to SEMO's Paytience Holman. In the bottom of the third, Joie Giarrizzo worked a full-count walk and then moved 60 feet from home after a sacrifice bunt and a ground ball out. Amy
Vetula, the team's top hitter, ripped a hard grounder in the hole to short, but flashed her speed by beating out the throw home. Giarrizzo scored on the play, giving Lipscomb a 1-0 lead.
The purple and gold doubled its lead in the fifth frame when Giarrizzo doubled to center field to drive in Elise Shewmaker who reached on an error to lead off the stanza. That would be enough to give the Bisons their 3rd-straight victory.
