Shewmaker drives in three to bring the Bisons from behind in Saturday split

NASHVILLE - Lipscomb softball split its Saturday doubleheader with Jacksonville State at Draper Diamond. The Bisons dropped game one 4-1 before coming from behind to win 8-4 in the night cap.

The decisions move Lipscomb to 16-24 overall and 6-8 in ASUN play, while JSU goes to 24-16 and 8-6.

GAME ONE
The Bisons got a pair of knocks from Kyndall Crawford and Presley Leebrick at the plate and a complete game from Makayla Veneziale in the circle, but they were limited to just five base hits and were unable to string anything together.

The Gamecocks scored twice in the top of the first on a walk and three singles, before the Bisons responded with their lone tally in the bottom of the frame. Batting leadoff for the first time this season, Leebrick pounded a double to left center and then came around to score three batters later when Kamrie Rich laced a base knock into center to cut into the deficit, 2-1.

JSU added runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead. Lipscomb only managed to get two base runners over the last four innings and were unable to mount a comeback.

Veneziale suffered the defeat, moving her to 2-6 on the year. The Gamecocks scored three earned runs on seven hits, five walks and one hit by pitch. The freshman tossed a career high 161 pitches in the effort.

GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, the Bisons found themselves in a hole through the first five innings before a big 6-run frame put the purple and gold in front for good in the sixth. Kate Peters worked a complete game for Lipscomb and improved to 7-7.

Peters allowed four runs, but they were all unearned on nine hits. She needed just 101 pitches to get the win.

Elise Shewmaker had a 3-for-4 game with a career-high three RBI and four other Bisons collected a pair of hits.

Trailing 1-0 in the third, Shewmaker sent a solo tank over the fence in left to even the score. It was her second home run of the season.

The Gamecocks scored twice in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead when the Bisons committed a pair of errors on a play at the dish. But the Bisons responded in the home half.

Crawford led off the inning with a double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Tori Womack then brought her home with a sacrifice fly to left field, making it a one-run game.

JSU wasn't done as they stretched the lead back out to 4-2 in the fifth after Lipscomb committed its fourth error on the game on a fielding error at first.

It was the bottom of the sixth when things got fun. Crawford and Katelyn Belding recorded singles before Jessie Brown reached on an error to load the bases.  Following a pitching change, Leebrick drove in a run with a single to right.

Shewmaker then ripped a 2-RBI single to right to give the Bisons their first lead of the night. Two batters later, Leebrick scored on a ground ball to short, before Cunconan cleared the bases with her 7th triple of the season down the right field line to make it 8-4.

Peters shut the door in the seventh to secure the Saturday split.

Leebrick, Vetula, Crawford and Belding each picked up two hits, while Cunconan drove in two runs. Six different Bisons scored a run.
