Softball splits Saturday doubleheader at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – Lipscomb softball went on the road Saturday and nearly pulled off an important doubleheader win at Kennesaw State, but the Bisons were unable to hold on to a late lead in game one.

The Owls took a 6-5 decision in the opener in eight innings, before the purple and gold bounced back with a 4-1 victory in the afternoon showdown.

The split moves Lipscomb to 14-20 overall on the year and 4-4 in ASUN Conference play, while Kennesaw State goes to 11-19 and 3-5.

GAME 1
The Bisons held a lead for four innings in game one, but a late home run from the Owls tied things back up before the home team walked it off in extra innings.

KSU grabbed the first lead of the day in the second inning after Ty Hardeman's 2-out triple to deep center scored an Owl following her leadoff single.

In the third frame, the Bisons bats came alive with three hits. Jessie Brown reached on a fielding error before Presley Leebrick singled two batters later. With two outs on the scoreboard, Kamrie Rich continued her clutch hitting with a single into shallow center field to drive home both Brown and Leebrick.

On the next at-bat, Maci Cunconan tagged a double to right field to put two Bisons into scoring position. Elise Shewmaker then grounded a tough chopper that the KSU second baseman couldn't handle, allowing Rich to plate and extend Lipscomb's lead to 3-1.

The purple and gold added to its advantage in the fourth frame when Amy Vetula and Leebrick hammered back-to-back doubles down the left and right field lines. On Leebrick's, she knocked in Brown and Vetula to make it 5-1 Bisons, while giving her a 3-for-3 day in just four innings.

Kennesaw State cut into Lipscomb's lead in the bottom of the innings, however, after a Bison fielding error kept the frame alive. Kiera Cooper poked a leadoff double to center and came around to score on the miscue later in the frame. Then two more Owls scored in the next at-bat on a double to center, trimming Lipscomb's lead to 5-4.

The scored stayed that way until the seventh inning when KSU's Pacy Villa drilled a 1-out solo home run to left field, her second shot of the season, to tie the game at 5-5 and send it to extra frames.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning for the Bisons in the top half, the Owls pounced. A leadoff double made things look bleek for the Bisons, but a heads up play from Vetula and Meghan Kline on a ground ball got both runners to tag out during a pickle. The Owls then doubled down the left field line with two outs, before a single up the middle and just out of the reach of a diving Shewmaker, drove in the winning run.

Kate Peters (5-5) suffered the loss after working only two-thirds of an inning. She allowed one run on two hits in three batters faced.

Laine Barefoot got the start in the circle and pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks, while Emily Yakubowski pitched 3.0 frames with one run on five hits and two walks.

GAME NOTES
  • Leebrick led the Bisons at the plate with three hits, while she and Rich paced the team with two RBI.
  • Brown scored a two runs to lead the team.
  • The Bisons recorded three doubles, drew one walk and struck out 12 times.

GAME 2
With a flow a lot like the first one, game two was all Bisons early.

Kennesaw State dodged some trouble in the top of the second when Cunconan and Shewmaker ripped back-to-back singles with one out, but a fly ball and a ground out ended the threat.

The Owls then took advantage in the home half and scored the game's first run after a leadoff walk, a single and back-to-back sacrifices to make it 1-0.

Then it was Lipscomb's turn in the third. After two quick outs, Leebrick picked up yet another base hit on the day with a single to right, followed by a walk from Kyndall Crawford.

Next up was Rich, and most Bison fans can probably guess how this one ended. Yep, she blasted a 3-run shot over the fence in left for her sixth bomb of the season, giving the Bisons a 3-1 lead.

Three pitches later, Cunconan went back-to-back as she lifted a opposite field shot to left center to make it a 4-1 Lipscomb advantage.

Peters got the nod in the circle and after giving up that run in the second, she tossed five straight shutout frames the rest of the way. The freshman picked up the win, improving to 6-5 on the year, while pitching a complete game. Peters allowed one run on seven hits and two walks, while striking out one.
