Softball swept by Eastern Kentucky in pivotal ASUN series

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb softball dropped its series finale on Sunday to Eastern Kentucky, 6-0. It marked the first ASUN Conference series sweep for the Bisons this season.

The loss dropped Lipscomb to 17-31 overall and 7-14 in league play, while EKU improved to 13-33 and 9-12.

EKU had its first scoring chance in the top of the first after two base hits, but the Bisons helped themselves get out of the jam with your everyday 8-1-6-2-5 out at third when it looked as though the Colonels would load the bases.

The Bisons looked to have a scoring threat cued up in the bottom of the third when Jessie Brown laced a leadoff single up the middle and then Amy Vetula followed with a bunt single down the third base line. The threat came up empty, however, as the next three Bisons went down in order.

Eastern Kentucky broke through in the top of the fifth after pinch-hitter Ariyana Miranda ripped a 1-out double into the left center gap. The Colonels then connected on back-to-back singles, driving in a pair of runs to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. That forced a pitching change for the Bisons as Emily Yakubowski was pulled for Laine Barefoot.

EKU struck again on the fourth pitch with a RBI triple in the gap, followed by a walk and then a RBI doubles to extend its advantage to 5-0.

Like they did two innings prior, the Bisons responded in the home half of the stanza with back-to-back leadoff singles from Brown and Vetula to set the stage. Presley Leebrick then did her job and moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, but the next two batters were retired on balls that never left the infield to keep Lipscomb off the board.

The Bisons were never able to get anything else going the rest of the game.

Yakubowski took the loss after pitching 4.2 frames, giving up three runs on six hits. She did strike out five batters on 78 pitches.

Barefoot's day lasted just three batters as all three reached via a triple, a walk and a double. She surrendered two runs on 11 pitches.

Brown paced the team with a 3-for-3 afternoon at the plate while Vetula went 2-for-4. Crawford and Cunconan collected the only other two hits.
