Lady Bisons Drop Match to Musketeers

Final Score: Xavier 4, Lipscomb 1
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio (Corcoran Field)
Records: Xavier (5-2-1), Lipscomb (3-4-1)

CINCINNATI, OHIO – Despite striking first and battling hard with a strong physical presence in Cincinnati, the Bisons were unable to hold on to their lead and fell to their Big East foes.

Kelli Beiler earned the Lipscomb goal in the first half after a rocket of a shot from Faith Adams off the left post made its way to Shelby Craft, who found Beiler in the box for a header.

The squads were tied at the half, but the Musketeers took control of the second half and notched three more goals to take the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Lady Bisons took to Corcoran Field with thunderclouds overhead, but did not let the showers that permeated the first half dampen their drive. The squad grabbed the first three shots of the match just eight minutes into play, junior Katia Hanger leading the charge with a shot four minutes after the whistle that went high.

The Musketeers responded with their own trio of shots, two of which were scooped up by sophomore keeper CJ Graham. Lipscomb fought back for control of match's momentum as Kale'a Perry battled on a drive from the 65 yards to the 20 yard mark for a shot that forced Xavier's keeper to make her first save of the match.

After a scramble in the offensive corner, Faith Adams launched off a shot from right inside the top of the box that ricocheted off the left post to the feet of Shelby Craft on the far side of the box. Craft settled the bar and chipped the ball back into play in front of Xavier's goalie box that Kelli Beiler buried with a header 28 minutes into play.

The Musketeers evened things up with a goal of their own four minutes later and the two squads held at a 1-1 tie going into the half.

The Lady Bisons battled coming out of the break, but Xavier drew a penalty kick ten minutes into the second half that saw the Musketeers take a 2-1 lead. The Musketeers held on to the momentum of the match and notched a third goal with just under 10' left in the match and sealed the deal with a fourth goal at the 85' mark.

The Purple and Gold battled with Xavier for the remainder of the final 45 minutes but were unable to create any chances to equalize the score.

HEAD COACH KEVIN O'BRIEN:
"Yeah, it was a tough one today for the Bisons. It was a tricky game and I think the reality is that we had a good first half where I don't think Xavier was quite themselves. The second half team that we saw in Xavier was the team that we had scouted – physical, aggressive, first to lots of balls – and that was the difference. I thought the second half they dominated the aggression side of things – they turned us around, really, in most facets of the game and they were just sharper than we were, so it's tough.

There's no doubt for me that we expended so much energy on Thursday night against Vanderbilt that we were tired today. I mean, [Xavier head coach Nate Lie] does a good job of rotating his squad where we don't rotate ours as much, and it was pretty evident. So, kudos to them.

Congrats to Xavier on a good win, we wish them the best in the Big East and now we've got time to work. We've got one game this upcoming weekend to kick off conference play and we've got to kind of reset. We've got to see the things that we do well and build on those. I think we were exposed in a couple ways here that are going to help us in the long run.

As much as it stings a little bit, it's good for us and, you know, we told the girls that it's tough sometimes. Sometimes you lose a game and sometimes you're beaten, today we were beaten by the better team, and we have to learn from it. So, we'll get to work on Tuesday and we're excited to kick off ASUN play on the weekend."

UP NEXT:
Lipscomb will be back in action on Saturday, September 17 in Clarksville, Tenn. as they open conference play against ASUN newcomer Austin Peay at 6 p.m. CT.
