NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's cross country made program history Saturday afternoon as they claimed their first team at-large bid to the NCAA National Cross Country Championships in program history. The Bisons earned their at-large bid following their fifth-place finish at the NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships last weekend.
"We're very proud of our women's team for qualifying for the NCAA Championships," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Nick Polk. "This has been a goal of this program for many years. This is a long time coming and was made possible not only by these women, but many that have come before them."
The Bisons have been on a roll over the 2023 season, finding big finishes at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational, Angel Mounds Invite, and Nuttycombe Invite on their way to claim their tenth ASUN Cross Country Championship title at the end of October.
Lipscomb's squad dominated the ASUN postseason awards, claiming the ASUN women's cross-country Runner of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year titles. The Bisons saw all ten of their runners in the meet claiming spots on ASUN All-Conference Teams, including earning six of the seven spots available on the First Team All-Conference.
The Purple and Gold kept the pace high last weekend in Gainesville, Fla. as all seven Bisons logged personal best times in the 6K to finish fifth out of 29 teams with just 107 points at the meet. The Bisons fought hard with Tennessee, Florida, Ole Miss, and Alabama throughout the race and finished just nine points behind Alabama's score of 98 whilst simultaneously claiming a 117 point cushion between themselves and Georgia Tech, who finished in sixth with 224 points.
The Bisons will head to Charlottesville, Va. for the 2023 NCAA Cross Country National Championships, hosted by the University of Virginia. The women's 6K race will begin at 9:20am CT on Saturday, Nov. 18th.
"We're thankful to make it to the NCAA Championships and excited for the opportunity to have our best meet yet," Coach Polk finished.
