NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's soccer's impeccable 2023 season came to a close Thursday afternoon in their semi-final match against the North Alabama Lions. After a scoreless first half, the Lions found the back of the net 68 minutes into play and the score held at 1-0 through the final whistle despite the Bisons' best attempts at equalizing.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With the stage set in Nashville, the two squads took to the pitch in a chilly matinee matchup for the first of the two ASUN semifinals matches playing out at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex on Thursday. Things got under way quickly with Emanuela Schurch opening the shot count with a shot to the top right of the net just over a minute and a half into play to force an early save from UNA's keeper.

The two teams traded play back in forth, the two defensive and offensive powerhouses colliding to hold the contentious play in the midfield for the majority of the first half. The Bisons made their way back into the Lions' defensive end and 13 minutes into play Alivia Carapazza ripped a shot from outside the box that was blocked by one of the North Alabama defenders.

UNA's offense made their first showing of the match just shy of the 15-minute mark with a shot that snuck through the Bisons' defense low on the center of the net, but sophomore netminder Sara Kile was there to scoop up the shot and hold the score at 0-0.

The Bisons continued to log shots left, right, and center, with Lydia Hindt, Kelli Beiler, and Lucy Ream getting in on the action before the Lions could come up with an answering shot which flew wide off target. Lipscomb's squad jumped right back on the attack with shots from Marcella Cash and Kiara Pralle just over a minute apart that both went wide of their target as well.

The two squads continued to trade play back and forth with shots added to both teams' tallies, but the score held at zeros moving into the break.

Play resumed after halftime with the physicality dialed up tenfold as both teams fought to find the back of the net. Alivia Carapazza took her second shot of the match just 38 seconds back into action with a rocket from outside the 18-yard box that skimmed over the crossbar.

Bella Carapazza then got onto the stat boards with a shot of her own that was blocked by one of the Lions' defenders. The elder Carapazza sister was back on the attack moments later with a long ball from the right side that flew towards the top corner of the net and was punched away by the Lions' keeper.

North Alabama converted on a rush just under 69 minutes into play with a series of touches that wound through the Bisons' defense and a shot that slipped under Kile's diving arms. Play got chippier as the Bisons sought to equalize and the Lions fought to hold them off with three yellow cards distributed to the Lions within five minutes of each other.

Lipscomb's squad launched long ball after long ball into the Lions' defensive end to try and create chances to equalize, but the UNA defense held strong and the Lions 1-0 lead held through the final whistle, marking the end of the Bisons' 2023 ASUN postseason campaign.
