Women’s Tennis Opens ASUN Play With 5-2 Win Over EKU

RICHMOND, Ky. – Lipscomb women's tennis hit the road for their opening weekend of conference play on Sunday. The Bisons secured a decisive 5-2 victory to begin their ASUN schedule in the 2022-23 season.
 
The Purple and Gold got off to a hot start in doubles play as Sasha Dobranos and Anja Trbeznik delivered a scorching 6-0 win at No. 1 to open doubles scoring in Lipscomb's favor. Liza Diachenko and Perri Howard capitalized on the energy to claim a 6-4 win on court three, sealing the doubles point for Lipscomb.
 
The freshman duo of Sofiia Paladi and Alina Cherniaieva brought the heat on court two, their match was halted at 5-2 with the Bisons up 40-0 when the doubles point was decided.
 
Battle continued in singles play with Paladi leading the charge for the Bisons in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep on court two to claim an early 2-0 lead for Lipscomb.
 
The Colonels pushed back with a 6-3, 7-5 win on court three over Trbeznik to put EKU on the board. After a long-drawn three-set fight at the top spot, Dobranos fell 7-6(7-4), 2-6, 6-4 to her EKU opponent.
 
Cherniaieva answered the challenge with a swift 6-2, 6-3 win on court five to give the Bisons the go-ahead point with just two courts left battling for the final points.
 
Diachenko brought home the clinching point on court four when her opponent retired during the third set of a well-fought match from Diachenko (4-6, 7-5(7-4), 2-0(wr).
 
Freshman Taisia Yakunina cemented the Bisons' win with her 6-3, 6-2 straight set victory on court six.

The Bisons will return to Nashville Wednesday, Mar. 15 as they welcome local opponent Tennessee State to the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center for their final non-conference matchup of the season beginning at 1:00pm CT.
