Softball Claims First Win of the Season Over Bears

TUCSON, Ariz. – Lipscomb softball bounced back on the second day of the Candrea Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona, to claim their first win of their 2024 campaign. The Bisons put in solid work across the board and earned a 6-5 win over the Northern Colorado Bears.

The Bisons took off at a fast clip from the initial "Play ball!" call. As the designated visiting team, Lipscomb's squad stepped up to the plate first and after their first two batters were grounded out, Brenna Sherman got on base with a double and was sent around home in short order as Katelyn Belding smacked a homer out of left field to set the pace of the game early.

The Purple and Gold held the Bears off through the bottom of the first and stepped into the second frame with the same aggressive mindset. Although the Bisons got two on base, the Bears were the ones to find home plate in the bottom of the second and bring the Bisons' lead down to just one run.

The Bisons were soon back on the attack as Sherman once more claimed a base and made her way around to second and was sent home by Josey Polk to put the Bisons up 3-1 halfway through the third frame. The Bears cut the Bisons' lead once more as a fielding error gave Northern Colorado's first runner of the inning an opportunity to cross home plate.

As the fourth inning began, two Bisons drew walks to gain first base, but the squad ultimately failed to score in the fourth frame. The Bears capitalized on the Bisons' scoreless inning to record two runs of their own, gaining the lead for the first time in the contest as they went up 4-3 at the fourth inning split.

Lipscomb's squad rose to the challenge; however, and put both Polk and Elise Shewmaker on base in the top of the fifth inning. A double up the middle from Lauren Higginbotham gave both runners the time to make it around to home before the Bears could record their third out of the inning, sending the Bisons into the lead once more.

The Bisons' defense held the Bears to a scoreless fifth frame and both squads went three up, three down in the sixth inning to bring the decision of the match's fate into the seventh inning. Sherman and Belding gained places on base early in the seventh inning and a throwing error on a Polk hit sent pinch runner Briyana Wright across home plate to give the Bisons the go-ahead run.

Northern Colorado put up a fight in their turn at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on a throw late in the inning. However, the Bisons' defense stood tall and the Purple and Gold claimed their first win of the season with a 6-5 final score.
