Softball Splits Day Two In Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Lipscomb softball completed their second day at the Furman Invitational with a split set of results The Bisons fell 3-0 to the Towson Tigers and delivered an impressive 5-4 walk-off win over the IUPUI Jaguars.

GAME 1: TOWSON 3, LIPSCOMB 0
After split results the day before, the Bisons looked to capitalize on their momentum from the night before in their early morning game on Saturday.

The Bisons were first up to bat for their third game of the tournament and Alyssa Hastings made her way around to second base after drawing a walk when she took advantage of a wild pitch, but the following two Bisons were put out and the Tigers took over in the batter's box.

A single that snuck through to the left field give the Tigers an early RBI in the bottom of the first inning and a grounder through the middle just a few minutes later gave Towson their second RBI of the inning and a 2-0 lead early in the game.

Lipscomb's squad continued their aggressive offensive work as the three outs for the inning came from a pop fly by Josey Polk, a grounded out for Briyana Wright, and a lined out hit by Joie Giarrizzo with Elise Shewmaker left on base after a single and a stolen base. The Purple and Gold defense held the Tigers to a three up, three down inning to close out the second frame.

The Bisons continued to put runners on base throughout the game with Shewmaker once more claiming a spot on base and making it as far as third base, but the Tigers were the ones to score another run with a homer in the bottom of the fourth and the Bisons fell 3-0 in their third game of the weekend.

GAME 2: LIPSCOMB 5, IUPUI 4
Lipscomb's squad kicked it up a notch in their second game of the day as they faced off against IUPUI. The Jaguars took to the plate first in the matchup and sent a runner around as far as third base, but the Bisons' defense combined to hold off an early IUPUI lead.

In their own turn at the plate in the first frame the Bisons continued their aggressive work with all three first batters getting a piece of one of the first two pitches thrown to them before being put out.

Lipscomb's defense cracked down on the Jaguars as the second frame began, allowing just one hit in a single that was soon rendered insignificant as the squad claimed their third out of the inning. In her first at bat of the game and as the squad's first batter of the inning, Elise Shewmaker sent a homer out of the park between left and center field to put the Bisons up 1-0 in the contest.

The Jaguars put their own run on the boards in the top of the third with a RBI, but the Bisons held off any further runs with a pair of back-to-back ground outs. Lipscomb's squad once again got a runner as far as second base but the score held tied through the end of the third frame.

The score held steady through the fourth inning with three up and three down for both teams before the Jaguars broke the stalemate in the top of the fifth with another RBI. The Bisons' aggression paid off in the bottom of the sixth as the squad tallied three more runs to go up 4-2 in the contest.

Elle Smith knocked a double as the first batter up for the Purple and Gold and she was joined on the bases by Alyssa Hastings in short order when she drew a double from the Jaguars' pitcher. On a sacrifice bunt from Lauren Higginbotham, Smith and Hastings both advanced around the bases.

Smith took advantage of her scoring position as Elise Shewmaker knocked a single towards third base and sent Smith across home plate and moved Hastings up into scoring position. Shewmaker herself kept the aggression as she stole second base during Josey Polk's turn at bat.

Polk knocked a fly ball high up to center field that was caught for an out, but not before Hastings crossed home plate and Shewmaker advanced on to third base. Jack Busch next stepped up to the plate and knocked a single to left field, sending Shewmaker on across home plate and giving the Bisons their 4-2 lead before the break.

The Jaguars tied things up in the top of the seventh just as Lipscomb looked ready to clinch the win with a pair RBIs before the Bisons could log the third out. The Purple and Gold kept the pressure on in the bottom of the inning and Kaylyn Belfield exemplified the squad's offensive aggression with a single to left field and a stolen base to take second moments later.

Smith put the pin in Lipscomb's performance with a single up the middle to send Belfield around to home plate and secure a walk-off 5-4 win for the Bisons to conclude their second day in Greenville.
