GREENVILLE, S.C. – Lipscomb softball wrapped up their weekend at the Furman Invitational on Sunday afternoon in a matchup with tournament host Furman. The Bisons fell 9-3 to the Paladins in their final game of the weekend.
The Bisons fought from the get-go to hold off the Paladins, combining to prevent a runner on third base from scoring in the first inning to hold the game in a scoreless standstill moving into the second frame.
Lipscomb's squad looked to score the first run of the game in the top of the second with Lauren Higginbotham making it around to second base before the 'Dins put the Bisons away. Furman broke the stalemate in the bottom of the second, however, notching an RBI before the Bisons could halt their efforts.
The Paladins continued their aggression in the third inning after holding the Purple and Gold to a three up, three down inning by recording three more hits with a pair of RBI and a fourth run tallied on a throwing error from Lipscomb's defense.
The two teams held each other to just four batters in the fourth inning and the Bisons looked to change their luck at the top of the fifth. Kaylyn Belfield got on base first for the Bisons in the inning with a single to the 'Dins shortstop, stealing second base moments later.
A long single up the middle from Jack Busch gave Belfield time to round the bases and cross home plate, putting the Bisons on the board. As Presley Rader and Joie Giarrizzo each got on base in their turns at bat, Alyssa Hastings sent pinch runner Briyana Wright and Giarrizzo home in a pair of RBIs to bring the Bisons within one of Furman's lead.
The 'Dins answered with a decisive bottom of the fifth, logging four runs to extend their lead to 8-3 as the afternoon wore on. The first run to extend the lead came as an RBI single followed by another run during the next batter's tenure in the box on a throwing error from the Bisons' defense.
A second RBI and another unearned run on a throwing error gave the Paladins their 8-3 lead moving into the sixth frame of the game. A walk and a single from Wright looked to put the Bisons in a scoring position in the top of the sixth, but Furman's defense held off Lipscomb's efforts and the 'Dins stepped up to the plate once more, notching a sixth RBI to go up 9-3.
A three up, three down top of the seventh sealed the Bisons' fate and concluded their weekend in Greenville.
