Bisons Fall to Belmont in Home Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed familiar foe Belmont to Draper Diamond Wednesday afternoon for their first home game of the 2024 season. After a close few opening innings, the Bruins opened it up and took home a 9-6 win over the Bisons.

The historied rivals came to play from the get-go on Wednesday, each scoring a run in the first inning with Elise Shewmaker sending a fly ball over to right field that gave Elle Smith enough time to cross home plate and tie the game 1-1 after the Bruins opened the scoring in the top of the first inning.

Lipscomb's squad looked to take control of the game in the second inning, holding the Bruins to a scoreless top of the second inning before Macyn Kirby sent a single flying towards the Bruins' shortstop to give Kaylyn Belfield time to score the Bisons' second run of the game in the bottom of the second.

Belmont then kicked up the pressure with a four-run top of the third to take the lead from the Bisons before holding the Purple and Gold to a three up, three down inning to end the third frame.

The Bisons defense closed in on the Bruins during the top of the fourth, allowing just one walk and preventing the Belmont runner from advancing from there.

In their turn at the plate, the Bisons took advantage of an error-filled inning for the Bisons for Belfield to once more make her way around the bases and bring the Bisons' within two runs of the Bruins.

The two teams hit a brief stalemate in the fifth frame as the two squads both put runners on base but prevented them from scoring.

Belmont broke the game open in the sixth frame, logging four more runs to go up 9-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Tori Womack logged her first homer of the season and her third career home run to give the Bisons a spark towards cutting the Bruins' lead as the game wound down.

The Bisons once more closed in on the Bruins in the top of the seventh, holding off Belmont's runners as they advanced to second and third to hold their score at nine runs.

Lipscomb's squad fought to close the gap in the bottom of the seventh, with Josey Polk sending Brenna Sherman home with a single down the left field line. Macyn Kirby followed with a single towards third base to send Elise Shewmaker to home plate, cutting the difference down to just three runs on a bases-loaded opportunity.

Elle Smith got hold of a pitch from the Bruins' pitcher, but her fly ball to left field was caught by Belmont's defense and the game was called at 9-6 in Belmont's favor.
