Softball Falls 9-0 in Shutout to #23 Kentucky

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball welcomed the #23 ranked Kentucky Wildcats to Music City on Wednesday for a midweek matchup. The Wildcats ran away with the day at Draper Diamond, taking home a 9-0 win from the contest.

The midweek matchup looked to be an interesting one early in the matchup as the Bisons logged two quick outs on the Wildcats with second baseman Briyana Wright collecting a pop fly and a ground out to hold Kentucky off early in the first inning.

The Wildcats then loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, but freshman pitcher Courtney Sauer struck out Kentucky's batter to log the Bisons' third out of the inning and hold the score at 0 moving into the bottom of the inning.

The Bisons took Kentucky's pitcher to a full count twice in the bottom of the first inning, but he Wildcats held off Lipscomb's offense and the game remained scoreless through the first frame.

Kentucky's offense broke open the scoring in the top of the second inning, putting up a two RBI double and an RBI single before holding the Bisons to a scoreless bottom of the frame to take a 3-0 lead going into the third inning.

The Wildcats struck once more in the top of the fourth with another two RBI double to expand their lead to five runs before the Bisons could log their third out of the inning.

A pair of singles in the bottom of the third put the Bisons in scoring position, but Kentucky's defense closed in on the Purple and Gold and the score held at 5-0 in the Wildcats' favor moving into the fourth frame.

Freshman Ryleigh Sapp stepped into the circle for the Bisons to relieve Sauer and Lipscomb's defense locked down on Kentucky's offense to hold them to a three up, three down inning and move into the bottom of the fourth.

The Wildcats opened up their lead once more in the top of the fifth inning with a single through the left side to send their baserunner on third around home plate for a 6-0 lead before holding the Bisons to a three up, three down inning to move into the sixth frame.

A double down the left field line and a two RBI home run in the top of the sixth brought the difference to nine runs in Kentucky's favor as the afternoon wore on before a pair of fly outs and strikeout sealed the shutout victory for Kentucky.
