Softball Falls to Racers, Take Down Hoyas in Day Two of Purple & Gold Challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball took on their next two competitors on Saturday during the second day of their Purple and Gold Challenge. The Bisons fell 5-1 to North Dakota State before bouncing back with a commanding 13-4 win over Georgetown to end their second day of competition.

GAME 1: NORTH DAKOTA ST. 5, LIPSCOMB 1
After a hard-fought game against NDSU the night before, Lipscomb's squad brought a new fire to the second matchup between the two teams. North Dakota State struck first with a home run in the top of the fourth inning followed by another home run in the top of the fifth.

The purple and Gold found their footing in the bottom of the fifth and got on the board as a drawn walk from Elise Shewmaker on a bases-loaded opportunity advances Lipscomb's runners to send Macyn Kirby across home plate.

North Dakota State responded with their third home run of the game in the top of the sixth inning with two runners on base to go up 5-1 late in the game. The two squads closed ranks on defense during the rest of the contest and the NDSU Bison claimed the win.

GAME 2: LIPSCOMB 13, GEORGETOWN 4
The Bisons then turned to face the Georgetown Hoyas for the first time in the weekend. After a scoreless first inning in which freshman Courtney Sauer struck out the first batter of the game, the Hoyas broke open the scoring with a three-run top of the second frame to claim an early lead.

Lipscomb's squad fought to find their feet offensively as their defense closed in on Georgetown. Elise Shewmaker sent a single into centerfield in the bottom of the second to send Alyssa Hastings across home plate and to put the Bisons on the board before the Hoyas could halt their progress.

Georgetown's squad expanded their lead with an RBI in the top of the fourth but the Bisons soon found their gear in the bottom of the fourth, claiming five runs to change the lead from 5-1 in favor of the Hoyas to 6-4 in Lipscomb's favor in just one inning.

Briyana Wright set the Bisons' tone for the inning with her single up the middle to send Josey Polk around to home base. Macyn Kirby then tied things up for the Bisons as her double up the middle sent Jack Busch and Briyana Wright home to bring the overall tally to 4-4.

Alyssa Hastings sent the Purple and Gold into the lead as she smacked a single up the middle to send Elle Smith and Macyn Kirby across home plate and give the Bisons a 6-4 lead.

Lipscomb's squad shut the Hoyas down with just a single in the top of the fifth inning with three putouts to step back up to the plate where Josey Polk soon repaid the favor of Wright batting her home as she sent Shewmaker around to home plate to put the Bisons up 7-4.

After the Purple and Gold shut the Georgetown offense down once more in the top of the sixth inning before logging an immense effort in the bottom of the inning.

Smith and Kirby got on base as the first two batters of the inning for the Bisons and Hastings soon sent the pair across home plate with a heavy single past second base.

After a single from Shewmaker advanced Hastings to second base, Polk sent a single out to right field to bat Hastings in and give the Bisons a 10-4 lead.

Lauren Higginbotham entered the game to pinch hit for Kaylyn Belfield and held the defense's attention enough to give Polk room to steal second base.

A ground out to the pitcher for Higginbotham brought Jack Busch into the batter's box for the Bisons and she crushed a home run out of the left field wall for a 3 RBI homer to put Lipscomb up 13-4 and clinch the squad's second win of the weekend.
