Thompson Wins ASUN Individual Championship, Bisons Finish Runner-Up

OWENS CROSSROADS, Ala. – Lipscomb Women's Golf finished runners-up at the 2024 ASUN Championships on Tuesday. Junior Lauren Thompson highlighted the tournament as she finished as the Individual Medalist, finishing (-11) on the tournament, for a seven-stroke margin of victory. 
 
The Bisons got started with a 289 (+1) in the first round as the squad held a three-stroke advantage over Kennesaw State. Lipscomb continued to be on the front foot through the second round, turning in a 284 on Monday to sit at (-3) on the tournament. Through 36 holes, Lipscomb sat five-strokes ahead of Kennesaw State. On the final day of competition, tough pin locations proved difficult for the Bisons. Lipscomb fell behind early, shooting (+11) through its first nine holes. Kennesaw State took advantage and surged to the lead, getting out to as much as a six-stroke advantage. The Bisons, however, made things interesting over the final three holes with a Lauren Thompson eagle and five birdies to put the pressure on KSU, but ultimately fell just short. Kennesaw State finished even on the tournament after shooting a 286 in the final round while the Bisons finished just behind at (+2) with a 293 in the final round. 
 
Lauren Thompson was steady throughout the entire competition. In round one, Thompson posted a 71 (-1) and sat tied for second. The junior caught fire in the second round, leaping ahead of the competition. Thompson finished her second round (-8) with eight birdies and 10 pars. Her score of 64 set an ASUN Championship record for the lowest 18-hole score and lowest 18-hole score vs par. Sitting four strokes ahead of the next golfer, Thompson started her third round on the slower side, going (+2) through the first nine. Jacksonville's Ivete Rodriguez put pressure on Thompson as the golfers were tied at (-7) on the tournament heading into the last eight holes. Thompson, however, never lost her confidence and shot par on holes 10-15. Thompson was incredible over the last three holes with birdies on 16 and 18 and an eagle on 17. She holed in a shot from 110 yards on 17 to make eagle and make up two shots for her squad. All told, Thompson finished with a 205 (-11), which matched an ASUN Championship record for lowest 54-hole score and 54-hole score vs par. Thompson led the field in Par 3s (-3) and Par 5s (-5), and connected on 34 pars, 14 birdies and an eagle. 
 
Ally Williams gave Lipscomb another top-10 finish as she tied for ninth place. She turned in steady scores (72, 73, 73) all tournament to finish with a 218 (+2). Williams was even on Par 3s and Par 5s over the 54-holes. She carded 37 pars and eight birdies over the three rounds. 
 
Zi Yu Foong had a solid performance in her first ASUN Championship debut, turning in a top-20 finish. The true freshman was solid in the first round with a 71 (-1) as she sat tied for second place. The final two days of competition were more of a grind for Foong, with a 74 and 75 in the second and third rounds, respectively, as she tied for 18th with a 220 (+4). She had 31 pars and 10 birdies on the tournament. 
 
Mary Kate Smith was the next finisher for the Bisons as she tied for 24th with a 223 (+7). Smith shot a 75 in both the first and third rounds and contributed a 73 in her second round. The graduate student connected on 35 pars and eight birdies. 
 
Danica Badura competed in the fifth spot for the Bisons in the first round, turning in an 84 (+12) and Tzunami Polito subbed in the fifth spot for both the second and third rounds. Polito shot a 75 in the second round and finished her tournament with a 76 in the third round. 
 
All told, Lipscomb finished with 172 pars and 43 birdies to go along with an eagle over the three-day event. 
 
This season, The Bisons won three tournaments and finished top-5 in seven of its nine tournaments. 
 
UP NEXT
With her Individual Championship, Lauren Thompson earned an automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Tournament as an individual player. Thompson will learn where she will compete in the 2024 NCAA Regionals during the NCAA Selection Show on Wednesday, April 24.
