Softball Drops Game Three of Series to Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lipscomb softball returned to Knights Field in Louisville once more on Sunday morning for their final game of the series against Bellarmine. The Bisons took a one-run lead in the top of the fourth inning, but the Knights tied things up in the sixth before logging the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh to claim the final win of the series.

Lipscomb's squad set out to repeat Saturday's success from the get-go as they put together a bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the very first inning, but Bellarmine's defense closed in to hold Lipscomb's offense off early in the game with three putouts in the inning.

The Bisons returned the favor in the bottom of the first, however, putting up two putouts to open the inning before making a play from right field, through second base, and on home to catcher Jack Busch who put the Knights' runner out at home plate to end the inning.

Busch then knocked a double down the left field line during the Bisons' turn in the batter's box, but three ground outs from Bellarmine's infield halted Lipscomb's turn at the plate.

The Knights looked to get on the board first, opening the bottom of the second frame with a single to right center field on their way to loading the bases but a pitching change for the Bisons from Laine Barefoot to Courtney Sauer saw a fly ball popped up to Elle Smith in center field to withstand the dangerous opportunity.

The stalemate continued through the third inning as both squads put a runner on base but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Lipscomb's offense finally cracked the score board in the top of the fourth inning as Smith opened the inning with a single to center field, advancing to second on a putout against Elise Shewmaker.

Busch returned to the batter's box put was grounded out by the Knights' third baseman, but freshman Macyn Kirby took to the base path with a single down the left field line to advance Smith to third base.

The Bisons' aggressive baserunning returned at the end of the inning as the Knight's catcher tried to catch Kirby stealing with a throw to Bellarmine's second baseman who then turned and threw it to their first baseman, giving Smith ample time in the chaos to cross home plate from third base and put the Bisons up 1-0 in the top of the fourth.

The two teams locked in their defense, holding each other to three batters for the next four half-innings with just two strikeouts between the 12 downed batters.

Bellarmine's squad found some momentum in the bottom of the sixth frame, loading the bases in their first three batters of the inning and scoring their first run of the game on a single from their fourth.

The Knight's tried to sneak a second run on the board on that same single with their runner from second base, but she was tagged out at the plate and the score held tied.

After Lipscomb's squad logged a pair of putouts to earn another chance at the plate, the Bisons fought to take the lead once more as Macyn Kirby drew a walk after eight pitches from the Knights, stealing second base during Kaylyn Belfield's at-bat.

Belfield struck out swinging however, and the Knight's stepped back into the box once more.

The Bisons put up two ground outs against the Knights' first two batters, looking ready to head into extra innings, but Bellarmine started to find their stride as a single snuck through the right side.

After advancing to second base on a wild pitch, the Knight's found the go-ahead run with a double to right field that sent their runner around to home plate, and sealing the third game of the series for Bellarmine.
