Softball Fall 2-1 to Colonels in Regular Season Finale

RICHMOND, Ky. – Lipscomb softball returned to Gertrude Hood Field in Richmond on Friday to take on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in their series and regular season finale. The Bisons fought valiantly against the Colonels, but Eastern Kentucky's momentum carried over and the home team emerged with a 2-1 win to secure the series sweep over the Bisons.

The Purple and Gold looked to recoup some momentum after falling in both of Thursday's doubleheader, putting two runners on base in the top of the first inning with a single from Alyssa Hastings and Josey Polk finding first base on a fielder's choice before the Colonels could put the Bisons away in a scoreless first inning.

The Colonels' defense shut the Bisons down in the first frame and Eastern Kentucky's offense carried their momentum into the bottom of the frame where they took an early lead in the contest with a RBI single off of starting pitcher Ryleigh Sapp to go to a 1-0 lead in the first frame.

Lipscomb's squad put two runners on base in the top of the second inning in the same fashion as the first with a single from Lauren Higginbotham and Lauren Griffith finding first base on a fielder's choice, but the Purple and Gold were once again shut out by Eastern Kentucky's defense.

The Bisons returned the favor, however, and kicked their defense into gear to hold the Colonels to a three-batter inning with Macey Ogle stepping into the circle for Sapp and the squad carried their momentum into the top of the fourth where Lipscomb's squad drew a pair of walks and advanced both of their runners into scoring position, but a pair of strikeouts and a fly out sent the Bisons away.

After the Bisons held the Colonels to a three up, three down inning to end the fourth frame, Lipscomb's squad put two runners on base once again in the matchup as Kaylyn Belfield drew an 11-pitch walk off of Eastern Kentucky's pitcher and Alyssa Hastings knocked a single through the left side, but the Bisons were stalled once more by the Colonels' defense to hold the score at 1-0 to EKU as the game moved into the bottom of the frame.

A bobble in centerfield allowed Eastern Kentucky time to add a second run to their tally in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bisons found a new stride in the top of the sixth as Katelyn Belding drew ana walk and Elise Shewmaker knocked a single to second base to give the Bisons two runners on base.

Lauren Griffith took advantage of the situation and sent a huge single down the right field line to bring Belding across home plate and cut the difference to one run before the Colonels could cut off Lipscomb's momentum.

The Colonels put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning but a pitching change as Laine Barefoot stepped back into the circle gave the Bisons the drive they needed to record the third out of the inning and move into the top of the seventh for another chance to even the score.

Josey Polk looked ready to give the Bisons life, knocking a single up the middle to give the Bisons a runner on base with a fleet-footed Elle Smith stepping in to pinch run for Polk, but a ground out against Belding marked the Bisons' third out of the inning and sealed the Colonels' sweep over the Purple and Gold.
