NASHVILLE – Lipscomb Cross Country was selected to place first for women and second for men in the Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bisons also earned recognition throughout the league as highlighted by both the Men's and Women's Preseason Runners of the Year honorees.
The ASUN announced Thursday that Kiara Carter was voted as the Unanimous Women's Preseason Runner of the Year and Braedon Palmer as one of the Men's Preseason Runners of the Year
On the women's side, the Bisons earned 10 first-place votes out of 12 to rank number one in the Preseason Coaches Poll. The team totaled a whopping 141 points to top the league after securing the title of 2023 ASUN Women's Cross Country Champions last season, recording the largest margin of victory in ASUN history.
The men received three first-place votes to secure the second-place spot in the Men's Preseason Coaches Poll. With 131 points, the Bisons fell just 7 points short of Eastern Kentucky University's first-place score of 138 points. Last year Lipscomb placed third at the Conference Championships, finishing six points shy of topping North Florida's runner-up performance.
Kiara Carter's Unanimous Women's Preseason Runner of the Year award was a result of her dominant 2023 season, where she was named the ASUN Women's Runner of the Year. During the 2023 Cross Country Season, Carter was a two-time ASUN Women's Track Athlete of the Week and was named to the 2023 Fall ASUN Winners for Life Team. On the track, she competed in five meets. Carter earned her personal best in the 5k (16:54.6) at the ASUN Conference Championship and in the 6k (18:54.4) at the NCAA Division I South Region Cross Country Championships, where she placed ninth overall and qualified for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Carter is looking to cap off her career with a bang as she looks to compete in her senior season.
Braedon Palmer's accolade of being one of the three Men's Preseason Runners of the Year is his first major recognition by the conference in the realm of cross country. The senior competed at a high-level last season, competing in three meets for Lipscomb and never placing below the top 35. Palmer started off the 2023 season with a third-place showing in the 8k with a time of 24:26.6 at the Angel Mounds Invitational 2023 before placing seventh at the ASUN Conference Championship in the 8k with a time of 24:41.5. Palmer qualified to run at the NCAA Division I South Region Cross Country Championships, where he ran his personal best in the 10k (29:53.6) to place thirty-second overall.
Both the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams will look to start their season at the Belmont Opener on Friday, Aug. 30th. The women will start their 5k at 8:45 AM CT and the men at 9:30 AM CT at Percy Warner Park – Vaughn's Creek Cross Country Course in Nashville.
