Softball Sweeps Day Two of South Alabama’s Mardi Gras Tournament

MOBILE, AL – For the first time this season, Lipscomb swept the day with a 5-0 victory over the Black Bears and a 5-1 win over the Islanders. The Bisons advance to 6-7 on the season after a stellar day of play, leaving it all out on the line.

LIPSCOMB 5, MAINE 0
The Bisons got off to another hot start against the Black Bears in the first inning. While Lipscomb was met with two strikes in the first two at-bats, they picked up the momentum quickly. Brenna Sherman was walked to first, after which Josey Polk singled, allowing Sherman to advance two plates to third. With Presley Rader at-bat, Sherman stole home and J.Polk stole second. Once Rader recorded a hit, she singled to right field and recorded an RBI on J.Polk's score. Ella Polk was next at-bat, doubling down the right field line to record an RBI on Rader's score before Mallory Ogle took to the plate and second E.Polk home on an RBI single. Before Maine even had a chance at-bat, the Bisons recorded four runs on four hits and forced an error. Both Rader and E.Polk recorded one hit on one at-bat, an RBI, and a run.

After being relieved early in yesterday's evening matchup with South Alabama, Laine Barefoot took to the mound with a fire lit underneath her. Barefoot struck out the first two batters in Maine's lineup before recording an assist on the third, who grounded it out to the mound.

Maine responded to Lipscomb's challenge with an intensity of their own, allowing no hits and no walks in the top of the second. The Black Bears then recorded their first two hits of the game to reach runners on base but could not capitalize on the scoring opportunities.

The third and fourth innings resulted in little production for either squad, with the Bisons combining for three hits and the Black Bears for one hit.

With one out in the top of the fifth, the Bisons loaded the bases and scored on a sac fly from Mal.Ogle to record an RBI and send Sherman home. The top of the inning ended shortly after, and the Bisons recorded three quick outs to enter the sixth up 5-0.

Lipscomb was unable to score any more runs throughout the game, but they held the Black Bears to no scores into the bottom of the seventh. The Bisons relieved Barefoot from the mound with Macey Ogle, switching things up at the mound with a sure victory under their belt. Throughout her six innings on the mound, Barefoot faced 22 batters, allowing only three hits and forcing three strikeouts.

The Bisons' offense was a bright spot in their performance, recording 9 hits and 2 walks on 30 at-bats. Lipscomb recorded 4 doubles and 4 RBI on 5 runs to beat the Black Bears 5-0.

LIPSCOMB 5, TEXAS A&M – CORPUS CHRISTI 1
The first two innings started out slow for the Bisons, recording just one hit on 7 at-bats. Defensively, Lipscomb gave up 3 hits on 7 at-bats through the bottom of the second.

Lipscomb started to catch their stride in the third, forcing a pitching change after two at-bats and loading the bases with no outs. Grace Cassarello made her season debut pinch running for Mac.Ogle but was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice, leaving Lipscomb with bases loaded and one out. Sherman stepped up to the plate and recorded a sac fly to right field for an RBI, sending Kirby home and advancing runners to second and third. With two outs, J.Polk singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw, during which Smith and Hastings made it home safely to give J.Polk 2 RBI. Leading into the fourth, the Bisons held onto a 3-0 lead.

The Bisons went on a scoring run again in the fifth when the Islanders relieved their second pitcher of the game. With no outs and two on base, J.Polk reached first on a fielding error and advanced to second, pushing Sherman to third and Smith home for an unearned run. In the next at-bat, Rader recorded an RBI on a sec fly out to centerfield, allowing Sherman to score the run unearned.

Lipscomb relieved Sapp for Courtney Sauer to start the bottom of the sixth. The Islander's lead off made it to first and advanced to second on a sac bunt to the mound. She ended up stealing third and scoring on a throwing error to put Texas A&M – CC on the board. Sauer allowed only one hit after the score, entering the seventh up 5-1.

Ryleigh Sapp recorded 4 strikeouts, allowing only 3 hits on 19 batters faced and forcing no walks throughout 5 innings. Macey Ogle went 2-3 hitting while four different Bisons scored and three recorded RBI in Lipscomb's first two-game winning streak this season.
