Softball Falls in Battle of the Boulevard

NASHVILLE, TN  – Lipscomb Softball faced the Belmont Bruins in their annual Battle of the Boulevard matchup. The game was originally set to take place on Wednesday, Mar. 5th but was postponed due to weather in the Nashville area.
 
Entering the matchup, the Bisons were on a four-game losing streak, winning just two of their last ten games. The Bruins were coming off a win against a conference opponent, winning eight of their last ten.
 
LIPSCOMB 1, BELMONT 7
The Bisons started the game off strong, recording a hit and earning a walk while stealing two bases in the top of the first. Lipscomb scored no runs before the end of the half inning and Belmont scored first in the bottom of the inning for an early lead.
 
Laine Barefoot had a big second inning, forcing all three at-bats to end in strikeouts swinging. By the top of the third, Barefoot had recorded four strikeouts.
 
Macyn Kirby had a hot hand for Lipscomb, recording hits in her first two at-bats. Despite not being able to score, Lipscomb kept the game close. Belmont capitalized in the bottom of the fourth, earning a walk and forcing an error to score two more runs. The Bruins led the matchup 3-0 by the end of the fourth.
 
Lipscomb struggled to find a hit, recording just one from Alyssa Hastings throughout the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
 
Courtney Sauer entered the circle for the Bisons in the bottom of the sixth, but Belmont didn't let up, scoring two more. Sauer was relieved by Halle Klaiber, but the Bruins scored two more runs to extend their lead to 7-0.
 
Elle Smith and Tori Womack recorded back-to-back singles to lead off the seventh. Smith stole third and Mallory Ogle recorded an RBI single to send Smith over the plate. The Bruins closed the inning out shortly after, securing their 7-1 win in the Battle of the Boulevard.
 
Elle Smith hit 2-3 on the evening, stealing one base with one run and three putouts. Macyn Kirby swung 2-4 with a stolen base of her own.
 
UP NEXT
The Bisons will compete in their final ASUN road series against Bellarmine in Louisville, KY. The first pitch of the doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 26th will take place at 11 AM CT.
