JONESBORO, Ark. - The Lipscomb women's golf team ended the first day at the Lady Red Wolves Classic in third after firing a 36-hole total of 592 (298-294).
Coming off a championship performance at the Butler Fall Invitational last week, the Bisons continued with another good start at Sage Meadows Country Club. The Purple and Gold were able to set two school-records with their rounds of 298 and 294 on the first day of competition.
Their first round score of 298 was the best mark in-relation-to-par ever set by a Lipscomb team. That record was short-lived, however, as the Bisons followed with a second-round, 294 to set the new mark. The course at Sage Meadows is being played at par-72.
Emily Keeling continues to play well this fall season and she is the top-scorer for the Bisons through 36-holes. The sophomore sits at the top of the leaderboard at 140 after firing back-to-back rounds of 2-under, 70.
Keeling's rounds of 70 are her lowest career 18-hole scores and her 140 total is her lowest 36-hole score of her career. The Farragut, Tenn. native also broke the school-record for the lowest individual 36-hole total by four strokes with her performance today.
Freshman Izzy Cantwell concluded her first day with a top-15 finish. She carded a 148 (72-76) and is tied for 15th. Her first-round, 72 is a career-low for the Cave Creek, Ariz. native.
Senior Rachael McMahan is just inside the top-20, as she is tied for 19th at 149 (74-75).
"The girls decided last week wasn't good enough with the records and broke the school record in-relation-to-par with a 298 first-round and then they all decided that wasn't good enough and broke that record by shooting 294 in the second-round, while walking 36-holes." head coach Jesse Lawley said. "6-over, is the best round-in-relation-to-par in school history as well as I've ever coached.
"I couldn't be more proud. I'd love to say all this record-breaking lately is getting old, but it's absolutely not. It's the smiles every time we get in the van, and the girls get to celebrate with their teammates. It's so rewarding to coach them, they make me so proud."
The Purple and Gold will conclude play with the third and final round tomorrow.
