Men's Basketball's Keith Edwards: Where Are They Now?

He came to Lipscomb from Old Hickory and for the past 20 years he’s taught and coached at Goodpasture Christian School in Madison. He was a member of Bison Basketball’s most successful seasons and Keith Edwards is thankful for his memories from those days. We caught up with him this week, when Keith spent a few minutes with LipscombSports.com.

What years did you compete for Lipscomb, and who coached you?

I played basketball from 1979-83 for Coach Don Meyer.

What teammate was most memorable?

We were very close as a team and we enjoyed all types of time together – especially going to movies on Friday nights. Alan Banks and I played together in high school, we were roommates my freshman year at Lipscomb, and we are still best friends.

What degrees have you earned?

I earned my B.S. from Lipscomb in 1984 and an M.Ed from Trevecca in 1997.

Why did you attend Lipscomb?

I had two priorities: to be in a Christian environment and to play college basketball. I narrowed my choices down to Lipscomb and Belmont, and Chuck Ross was calling me every night and putting pressure on me to choose Lipscomb. I made the correct decision. Thanks, Chuck!

What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?

My best memories are from being on Lipscomb’s first team to go to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City. That was my junior year, our record was 33-4, and we were ranked in the top 10 in the nation all year.

There are also many memories of Chuck Ross.

Who influenced your athletic career at Lipscomb?

Coach Meyer was my strongest influence, no doubt. I played point guard and he was very demanding of the point guards. He expected us to be coaches on the floor. He was an excellent teacher of the game and he taught us so much more than just basketball. I still have my player notebooks and refer to them often.

What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?

College years are a very special time in the life of young people. You meet new people and develop different friendships. I remember how many students came to the basketball games and cheered for us. I also remember hanging out in Bison Square after chapel. We had Bison Day every year on the first home game that was like an all day pep rally. Those are memories I will always keep.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned in your time at Lipscomb?

The best lesson I learned at Lipscomb was how to treat others. So many people were so nice to me and treated me better than I deserved to be treated. I developed my faith in God during my college years, and I am very grateful that I got to attend DLC.

Who were your favorite professors & why?

My favorite teachers were Dr. (Carl) McKelvey, Dr. (Bob) Hooper, and Doc (David) Adams. I felt like they really cared about me and wanted me to be successful

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Old Hickory, just a few miles outside Nashville.

What do you do now?

I’m a teacher, coach, and Athletic Director at Goodpasture Christian School in Madison, a few miles north of Nashville. I have been employed at Goodpasture for 20 years.

Tell us about your family:

I’m married to my wife, Michelle, who works in open heart surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. We have four children, ages 24-14. Our oldest daughter, Anna, just got married.
